Project by Studio H:T principal in charge Brad Tomecek (now with Tomecek Studio Architecture). This project tests the theory of bringing high quality design to a prefabricated factory setting. Enrolled in the LEED-Home Pilot, this residence completed certification. The modular home was conceived as two boxes that slide above one another to create outdoor living space and a lower covered rear entry. The passive solar design invites large amounts of light from the south while minimizing openings to the east and west. Factory construction saves both time and costs while reducing waste and using a controlled labor force. Built in a factory north of Denver, the home arrived by flatbed truck in two pieces and was craned into place in about 4 hours providing a fast, sustainable, cost effective alternative to traditional homebuilding techniques. Upgraded lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, doors, door hardware, windows, tile and bamboo flooring were incorporated into the design. 80% of the residence was completed in the factory in less than 3 weeks and other items were finished on site including the exterior stucco, garage, metal railing and stair. Stack-Slide-Stitch describes the conceptual process of how to tie together two distinct modular boxes. Stack refers to setting one modular directly on top of the other. Slide refers to the action that creates an upper southern deck area while simultaneously providing a covered rear entry area. The stitching or interlocking occurs with the upward extension of the lower volume with the front deck walls and with the rear two story vertical.

Given the very limited size of the plot, the most immediate decision would have been to build vertically in order to free up space for a garden. However, the chosen approach was to occupy the entire plot with an extensive single-storey volume, connected to the exterior in two distinct ways, through two outdoor spaces of different character. On one hand, a perimeter garden acts as a filter or boundary between the house and the avenue and surrounding streets. On the other, a central circular courtyard becomes the main outdoor space of the house, organizing the entire program around it. In one direction, this courtyard gathers the more public and open areas of the house, creating a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces that begins and ends in the perimeter garden. This sequence is materialized through four glass boundaries that can be fully retracted along the side walls. This operation allows for the perception of a hybrid space that spans from one end of the plot to the other, ultimately becoming the largest open space achievable on the property, not only visually but also physically.

This 1,100 square foot house is located in York, ME, on a long-held family plot historically used as farmland. The home is extremely quiet inside, owing to the ample thermal and sound insulation used. There was a conscious effort to limit square footage, both as a control on cost and on future energy use, without compromising the quality of the first floor public spaces (Living, Dining, Kitchen). A simple footprint was chosen to limit costs.

The standard-sized plot, as well as its composition the foundation on which social and leisure environments are kept, and the body that keeps them close. Two reductions were made on the ground floor volume to limit car accommodation and balcony, respectively. We have also tried to emphasize the formal independence between the slab floors as well as the horizontal identity of the composition to create a balcony in the bedrooms located on the back face, one reduction in the southwest corner of the upper floor. Furthermore, this difference is emphasized by the covering material for the facade, which is carefully used to achieve harmony between the house colour and texture. The translucence and cleanness we bring out through this architectural design show that we have brought a more enlightened look to this home. Spread over more than 50 acres, Adar is our oldest development in Coonoor. Located near Bandishola junction, the community has grown organically and now numbers over 40 residents. Wrapping around a hilltop and with an operational tea factory situated within it, Adar has dazzling views and retains a sense of being part of a tea plantation. Adar has aged very well. A group of like-minded residents together with large plot sizes and contractual limitations on over-development have resulted in a community that feels open and green.
