A typical product of the mid 80s, before its transformation, this St. Louis home was largely devoid character and detail. An early primary objective of the client was to transform the lackluster foyer into an impressive appetizer of things to come inside the now-grand home. An upmarket Art Deco-inspired light fixture with cascading fluted glass tubes arranged around a brass frame replaces a common low-quality Big Box affair. The fixture emits a serviceable, but subtle warm skin-flattering glow. To encapsulate the space and make a grand first impression, walls are elevated with distinctive, dimensional wallcoverings with authentic metallic leafing on horsehair panels. A simple, but striking bench with tufted ebony leather and curved brass legs offers plentiful and functional seating. The oval console with sensual brass legs and a honed marble top, soften the space’s angles. An iconic, arch-topped, vintage-inspired brass mirror intentionally contrasts with the modern space adding a splash of femininity. The delicate buffet lamp offers old world charm, while the rug is weather resistant to help contain the detritus of real-family living.

He wanted a private light filled home office, enough space to have friends over to watch the game, storage for his record collection and a place to listen to music on the most impressive stereo we’ve ever seen. So we took on the challenge to design the ultimate man cave: we peeled away layers of the wall and folded them into casework - a workstation with drawers, record shelving with storage below for less aesthetic items, a credenza with a coffee setup and requisite bourbon collection, and a cabinet devoted to cleaning and preserving records. We peeled up the roof as well creating a new entry and views out into the bucolic garden. The addition of a full bathroom and comfy couch make this the perfect place to chill…with or without Netflix.

We painted the walls and sanded and stained the floors. Once we added some modern furniture to the property, we defined function--where do I sleep, eat and watch Netflix!--and style. The property was in contract within a week for 11% over asking at the time we were hired!

The client moved into this space with a pair of high-end speakers he had from his last house. The built-ins were already there in his new family room. No other speaker which could fit on those shelves was going to be any better, or even as good, as the speakers he already owned--not without spending many thousands of dollars. It made sense to modify the built-ins to better fit the existing speakers. This photo shows the built-ins after that modification. Another photo shows the speaker and the shelves before the modification. An upgradeable TV and audio system, commensurate in quality to the speakers, was provided by DH Audio and Home Theater. The system is upgradeable by both software updates and by virtue of its NAD Master Series surround sound processor which uses a design much like a PC tower with its removable card slots. New technologies (4k video, MQA) have already come along since the introduction of this surround processor for which the owner can buy and or upgrade the removable cards. This cabinet is also the heart of a Bluesound wireless and expandable multi-room music system that the customer favored for its superior sound quality (e.g. over Sonos). Ease-of-use was also a must, so DH Audio & Home Theater custom programmed a remote so that one button press is all that's required to call up Fios HD TV, Netflix, Blu-ray discs, family photos and video, or music.
