Don’t let your eyes trick your mind, just confidently and fearlessly step onto the floor, cause the Rubik’s Cubes, shown here in Himalaya White and Cinderella, are not really twisting or rotating. Fancy that feeling? Just take it home!

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. The glass bowl was made in the glass studio owned by the owner which is adjacent to the residence. The mirror is a repurposed window. The door is repurposed from a boarding house. George Mendel

Clifton wanted the owners to experience different living spaces instead of one big room. This way, they have options, whether you’re cooking, sleeping or having friends over. When the divider is open, the apartment is bright and airy, but the bedroom can be closed off for privacy. Flexibility is found elsewhere in the flat. The TV is mounted on a pole suspended from the ceiling, allowing it to be swiveled to face the sofa, dining or bed.

Originally squeezed into the far end of the apartment, Clifton moved the kitchen closer to the middle, creating a semi-open space, which flows into the living area but is separated from the entrance corridor by a floor-to-ceiling cabinet that can be opened from both sides.

Slightly recessed ceilings filled with LED lights give the flat an ambient glow; the only standalone light fixture is a geometric pendant lamp above the kitchen table. All the lighting is remote controlled, with the devices holstered to the walls next to the front door and the bed.
