The goal of this master suite remodel was to design a luxurious yet simple environment that was not only beautiful but also comfortable, and designer Lori Wiles brought the transformation to life. The remodel was a transformation of the unused storage area in the bottom level of the clients’ home. Wiles' creative problem solving did more than just hide basement remodel problems like low ductwork and poorly located pipes. Instead, these obstacles served as a source of inspiration for some of the most interesting aspects of her design, such as the angular wood-paneled headboard wall with built-in nightstands. Following a stone, fire, water, and wood theme, the materials used in this master suite strongly relate to nature. Water flows to the tub from the stone accent wall in the bathroom, and an opposing stone wall in the bedroom creates a dramatic backdrop for a seating area. Both walls contain candle-filled niches and Cherry wood is employed throughout, creating warmth and continuity. To further achieve the natural look and feel of the bathroom, Wiles incorporated a variety of stones. The shower and immediate area around the freestanding tub feature pebble accent flooring that complement the surrounding large, rectangular tile floors. Eldorado Stone’s Black River Stacked Stone was chosen because it offered different textures and dimensions of the black, rugged, stacked stone, resulting in an organic environment that provides relief from the flat surfaces. By using quality materials such as Eldorado Stone, designer Lori Wiles was able to create a zen-like space that exceeded her client’s expectations. Moon Canyon is a 1930s hunting cabin in the Mount Washington neighbourhood of Los Angeles, restored by NoNo Studio with the careful, unhurried attention of someone re-potting an ancient tree. Original cedar panelling, a 1970s stained glass insert, and decades of layered character were preserved and built around rather than swept away. The project was featured in Architectural Digest, Leibal, and Vogue Australia. Three of our pieces found their place within it. The Oak Lamp — a floor lamp with a hand turned white oak base made by Surcle Wood in Los Angeles and an elephant grass shade woven by SWOPA in northern Ghana — brings two LA and Ghanaian craft traditions into a single object. The Casita Lamp, a table lamp whose ceramic base is formed by celebrated Oaxacan potter Eligio Zárate Blanco and whose palm shade is woven by award-winning weaver Belén Perez Garcia using a technique passed down through generations of her family, sits quietly in the space with the same material honesty that runs through the whole restoration. A small one-off bedside lamp completes the picture. Each piece was chosen for a home where nothing is incidental. That is precisely the kind of space our work is made for. The process involved thorough wall preparation and expert wallpapering techniques, resulting in a beautifully finished living room for the residents of Lancaster

This blended family of four desperately desired a master bath and walk-in closet in keeping with the exceptional features of the home. At the top of the list were a large shower, double vanity, and a private toilet area. They also requested additional storage for bathroom items. Windows, doorways could not be relocated, but certain nonloadbearing walls could be removed. Gorgeous antique flooring had to be patched where walls were removed without being noticeable. Original interior doors and woodwork were restored. Deep window sills give hints to the thick stone exterior walls. A local reproduction furniture maker with national accolades was the perfect choice for the cabinetry which was hand planed and hand finished the way furniture was built long ago. Even the wood tops on the beautiful dresser and bench were rich with dimension from these techniques. The legs on the double vanity were hand turned by Amish woodworkers to add to the farmhouse flair. Marble tops and tile as well as antique style fixtures were chosen to complement the classic look of everything else in the room. It was important to choose contractors and installers experienced in historic remodeling as the old systems had to be carefully updated. Every item on the wish list was achieved in this project from functional storage and a private water closet to every aesthetic detail desired. Back to back bathroom vanities make quite a unique statement in this main bathroom. Add a luxury soaker tub, walk-in shower and white shiplap walls, and you have a retreat spa like no where else in the house!

The new design expanded the footprint of the home to 1,271 square feet for the first level and 1,156 for the new second level. A new entry with a quarter turn stair leads you into the original living space. The old guest bedroom that was once accessed through the dining room is now connected to the front living space by pocket doors.
