Space efficiency was a major design factor in this one bedroom apartment on Fifth Avenue that serves as a second home. Pocket doors were installed to the living room to provide privacy when necessary but allow light to enter the interior of the apartment, and a spacious foyer now acts as a dining room. Custom cabinetry in the home office and bedroom maximizes storage space for books, and millwork details provide formality and visual interest to an otherwise simple space.

Where to start?
Sometimes it is with just one fundamental design decision that encompasses both architecture and interior design, and from there, the project flows.
Imagine a beautiful old city apartment, situated on a street that feels quiet when inside, but pulses with energy as you walk out of the house. The owners wanted a study, masculine in style, to be used occasionally as a cosy, quiet place to escape the urban environs, read, talk, have a drink… alone or with company.
It was with this in mind that the strawberry-coloured bookcase idea came into play. It was a daring thought for a gentleman’s study, and even more so considering that the apartment wasn’t drawn out in architecture sketches yet.
This bookcase became the first step, the foundation from which everything other design decision flowed.
The room became the hearth of the house, and is used now for different occasions. The bookcase, now nestled into the wall, keeps the gentlemen’s books, guarding his thoughts, while the other furniture is adapted for entertaining.
What the clients love, and what brings me total joy, is that was once meant to be simply an occasional room became part of the heart of the home. It livens up the spirits of the owners every time they enter.
