An open floor plan is thoughtfully segmented by custom millwork designed to define spaces, provide storage, and cozy large expanses of space. Sleek, yet never cold, its gallery-like ambiance accommodates an art collection that ranges from the ethnic and organic to the textural, streamlined furniture silhouettes, quietly dynamic fabrics, and an arms-wide-open policy toward the two young boys who call this house home. Of course, like any family home, the kitchen is its heart. Here, linear forms – think wall upon wall of concealed cabinets, hugely paned windows, and an elongated island that seats eight even as it provides generous prep and serving space – define the ultimate in contemporary urban living. Reimagined as a quiet retreat on a mixed-use Mission block, this former munitions depot was transformed into a single-family residence by reworking existing forms. A bunker-like concrete structure was cut in half to form a covered patio that opens onto a new central courtyard. The residence behind was remodeled around a large central kitchen, with a combination skylight/hatch providing ample light and roof access. The multiple structures are tied together by untreated cedar siding, intended to gradually fade to grey to match the existing concrete and corrugated steel.

In this classic Brooklyn brownstone, Slade Architecture designed a modern renovation for an active family. The design ties all four floors together with a free floating stair and three storey photo wall of blackened steel.

Hand rubbed blackened steel frames the fiireplace and a recessed niche for extra wood. A reclaimed beam serves as the mantle. the lower ceilinged area to the right is a more intimate secondary seating area.

This is a unique multi-purpose space, designed to be both a TV Room and an office for him. We designed a custom modular sofa in the center of the room with movable suede back pillows that support someone facing the TV and can be adjusted to support them if they rotate to face the view across the room above the desk. It can also convert to a chaise lounge and has two pillow backs that can be placed to suite the tall man of the home and another to fit well as his petite wife comfortably when watching TV. The leather arm chair at the corner windows is a unique ergonomic swivel reclining chair and positioned for TV viewing and easily rotated to take full advantage of the private view at the windows. The original fine art in this room was created by Tess Muth, San Antonio, TX.
