ARCHITECTURE: Honor Award PROJECT: Cathedral Campus CLIENT: Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Strada Architecture, LLC ENGINEERS: Allen & Shariff; Atlantic Engineering Services; Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineering, Inc. CONTRACTORS: JD&E PHOTOGRAPHER: Dennis Marisco DESCRIPTION: The Cathedral Campus project is an exercise in campus place making, which created a new administrative and religious center for the Diocese of Wheeling/Charleston. An opportunity for a makeover emerged when the parish school was closed due to low enrollment. The final result combines selective demolition, adaptive reuse of historic structures, and strategic additions to establish a new religious place focused on the historic St. Joseph’s Cathedral. JURY COMMENTS: While in some ways this project seems very basic, it is deceptively so. Its details, materials, and spaces – both internal and external – are rich and sophisticated. The building is strong and very comfortable in its response at an urban scale, just as it is very successful at the detail scale. It demonstrates a great understanding of the campus by removing those parts that do not work and creating a beautiful courtyard that enhances all of the surrounding buildings. The glass and metal façade, while modern, continues the lines of the brick buildings next to it and fits masterfully. Beautiful landscape work too!

HIGH PERFORMANCE ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE SACRED SPACES The professionals at Barrett Studio Architects always come up with the most functional design and appealing aesthetics while also achieving high performance structural integrity resulting in minimal maintenance and graceful aging. This is an understatement when it comes to the St. Walburga Abbey (featured in the New York Times and recipient of the Faith & Form Millennium Award for Religious Architecture). As a subcontractor to GH Phipps, our ICF expertise helped during the various expansions to the facility. Phase Four resulted in a new high mountain plains two-story, 20-room living quarters, as well as an addition to the main Sanctuary. Our team installed 12” ICF wall systems from the footings to the roof. The ICF block we used contains recycled content (not virgin foam) enabling the building to achieve R-50+ and a 4-hour fire ratings.

When Monsignor wanted to remodel the kitchen in the rectory, he called upon George, owner of A.G. Remodeling and Building, LLC. Together with Magazi Kitchen and Bath, we designed and installed a personalized kitchen to fulfill Monsignor’s requirements which were as follows: First, he wanted to keep his two 36” refrigerators which we were able to move into an alcove. Second, he wanted an island which we were able to accomplish by taking in a closet to enlarge the foot print of the kitchen. Third, we recommended all wood cabinets, shaker style in a honey stain as he desired a kitchen with earthy tones, not too expensive, and lots of storage. We achieved this with Wolf Classic full overlay Shaker doors with 42" tall wall cabinets, utility cabinets having pull out drawers and lots of drawer base cabinets with under mount soft close glides. He was very happy with the quality of the cabinets, the amount of storage and the price point. Fourth, Monsignor wanted a working kitchen, as he enjoys cooking. We installed a GE built-in 30” convection oven and microwave, a 36” cook top, and a 36” stainless steel vent with a capacity of 725 cfm, we were able to fulfill his request. Fifth, he was very active in selecting his floor tiles, porcelain Centec Cotta Teja; counter top, Silestone Mountain Mist; backsplash, Temple Brick with random religious inserts; and even his knobs, Rung Pulls in brushed satin nickel by Top Knobs. Working with him was quite an experience. With professional installation and creative design, Monsignor’s remodeled kitchen was not only beautiful but functional, just the way he wanted it.
