We love a Ranch-style home. The straightforward design of these homes is familiar and homey. Our client, a retired librarian and avid book and art collector, requested a full overhaul of her primary bedroom. She wanted more color and texture and was ready to jump right into the design process. Together we chose a lovely Farrow & Ball paint color called “Scallop” for the walls (it might be our new favorite color!). The floor was fitted with a custom wool rug in a creamy neutral and then layered with a vintage rug found in an antique shop just outside of Tulsa. All manner of textiles were added, from custom draperies to the plum-colored linen-wrapped bed to layers of pillows. The nightstands are in a dark burl wood with rounded, chunky feet and lots of storage space. We updated the lighting and hung the client’s fabulous and eclectic collection of art (some of it dating back to the 50’s) all around the room. This project truly exemplifies our love of layers, color and texture and mixing some old in with the new.

Situated in Kenwood, Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C., this whole-house renovation reinterprets a 1950s split-level into a rustic French country house. Published 3 times, The French country house plans for this renovation inform and guide the remodel. Short double-hung existing windows of various sizes on a 1950s brick front wall (see below) were replaced by straightforward openings along the front facade. By replacing them with a series of similar openings, the end result is a principled, simple elegance inspired by French country style homes. The rustic application of field stone arches and rough stucco are both inviting and enchanting, echoing French country interior design. Elements of French country home decor complement the home. The traditional French country home design has been widely published, including features in Renovation Style and Maryland Life magazines, among others. One singular continuous walkway runs the entire length of the main front under each of the French doors, and a courtyard created by stucco walls and stone piers create an inner sanctum in the front yard. In the back of the property, added French gates lead to a newly constructed pavilion.

The final design includes several "courtyard" and transitional spaces to accommodate the unique grading and provide several lounge spaces. Each of the home's many windows provides a different, picturesque view of the water feature focal point. The hot tub is purposefully close to the house for easy access, yet carefully positioned out of sight from the rest of the lounge areas so as to not draw attention away from the focal point. Quaint seating spaces, a fire pit lounge area, and a covered dining space are accented by ornamental grasses, hydrangeas, and night lighting. Our clients are thrilled with how the final project made their oddly shaped yard now perfectly fit their landscape needs and desires!

This home office was created from an outbuilding on the property. Seagrass wall-to-wall carpet was installed for ultimate durability and a relaxed vibe. We employed a high-low aesthetic to create a space that was unique but still within budget, utilizing the owner's Stickley desk, a custom desk chair, custom blush Roman shades, a Hudson Valley Fenwater chandelier and sconces, and multiple office items from budget sources like IKEA and The Container Store. But in this case, architectural plans were already drawn, the full schedule was finished, and our clients needed a partner to execute on the architectural plans – enter Gallery. A DIFFERENT APPROACH Construction and design are often the face of most renovations, but the planning and follow-through are naturally just as necessary to make it all come together. The project itself was a fairly straightforward gut renovation of the loft. Everything was included: new floors, a new kitchen, new bathrooms, new lighting. Our task was to manage every aspect of the construction, ensuring that the planning work of Todd Zwigard Architects was executed to the exact vision imagined for this Manhattan loft renovation. CONTEMPORARY GOES ECLECTIC Although we didn’t contribute to the aesthetic of the interior design in this project, we did carry out the plans that brought it life. The tone was very modern, with some eclectic touches. The kitchen, featuring an island with a baby blue lacquered finish, blends contemporary clean lines into an industrial-tinged, almost futuristic aesthetic. Reclaimed wooden doors and art pieces collected throughout the years are an ode to the client's travels, an artistic touch from Todd Zwigard Architects. LET’S TALK Quality of work is of course important, but there are several components of construction management that are equally vital: communication; processes that make sure you're able to adhere to schedules; protocols with both safety and communication. You might say this is the nerding out of the construction process. It’s not often the face of a project, but it’s absolutely massive in terms of carrying out a successful renovation, whether it’s a penthouse loft in Manhattan, a condo in Prospect Heights, or a kitchen in a Brooklyn brownstone. Quality construction management is probably one of the biggest ways to separate professional contractors from those who aren’t. ART FROM CHAOS This was such a large project, so our ability to procure and source all the finishes and fixtures was hugely important to our clients. The sheer number of floors, tiles, and plumbing fixtures alone that need to be ordered, in addition to everything else, plus figuring out lead times, shipments, deliveries, and inspections. It can quickly become chaotic, but there’s an art to the planning and organization, and we’ve mastered it. The larger a project is, the more likely that havoc will rear its head. The antidote is not only really proper planning and construction management, as we achieved in this Manhattan loft penthouse renovation, but also a great working relationship with everyone else involved in the project: contractors, architect, and clients alike. This enchanting lamp with its royal appeal will enrich any space and decor. 1,440 lumens of warm cascading light. Enchanting starlit shimmers of illumination descend down a spiraling path with a family of brass spheres down to its base, the wedding cake. Fantastic wedding gift or just because. Easy to remove for cleaning, eighteen inches sandblasted, white glass dish. One vintage Ford engine pulley for the lamp base, wedding cake. Lamp switch is nicely blended with brass spheres at lamp base. The idea for this lamp design took its sweet time. The process was started at the base with a retired Ford engine pulley. For me, this part was straightforward and I knew just what to do. From there on up, I was stuck in the thought until it felt right to continue. The whole spiral effect was a meticulous process that demanded a great deal of patience and focus. For the first time working with this color scheme of pure white, sensual and subtly hidden pink, and the regal tone of gold surprisingly grew on me and filled me with unimaginable splendor. This lamp deserves and requires a closer look. This is a one time build, so if you are considering, best to make the move. Handmade in Ashland, Oregon with integrity! All real materials, heavy steel, solid brass, and well engineered!

Tucked into the opposite end of the small kitchen and enhanced by natural light is the breakfast nook. “We have two small kids and needed space for them to sit and eat or play while we are cooking and cleaning,” she explains. Therefore the space features a bench with cushions and more storage underneath, again featuring the Semihandmade cabinetry, as well as an overhead pendant light from Crate & Barrel. Aja notes that there were no issues with the design and the process was virtually seamless. “We used IKEA’s measuring service to take initial measurements of the space and they did make an error which affected our ability to execute IKD’s design. However, our contractor was able to make a few cost-effective modifications, and we had to order some additional doors and panels from Semihandmade in order to complete the project,” she describes. In the end, Aja offers straightforward advice for others considering an IKEA kitchen. “I say go for it! We love our IKEA kitchen, and will always recommend to our friends to use a design service like IKD. It made the process so much smoother, faster, and gave us exactly what we wanted,” she concludes.
