In order to create a balanced feel to the room, a coffee station sits between a 27” Subzero paneled refrigerator on the one side and a 27” Subzero paneled freezer on the other. For additional cold storage, integrated refrigerator drawers were installed in the base cabinet below this coffee station to hold an assortment of beverages. The white inset cabinetry continues into a mud-room area complete with cubbies and lockers for each member of the family. A GE spacesaver stainless microwave was installed in the island and a 36” six-burner Wolfe range was added to this top-of-the-line appliance list allowing for a professional experience while cooking in this kitchen.

This custom kitchen is part of an adventuresome project my wife and I embarked upon to create a complete apartment in the basement of our townhouse. We designed a floor plan that creatively and efficiently used all of the 385-square-foot-space, without sacrificing beauty, comfort or function – and all without breaking the bank! To maximize our budget, we did the work ourselves and added everything from thrift store finds to DIY wall art to bring it all together. Since the kitchen / living room has no windows, we wanted to be sure that it felt warm and comfortable. We used a combination of recessed lights, under-cabinet lights, and this pendant light to create a bright welcoming space. We bought both the under-cabinet and pendant lights secondhand for $7.50 and $20 respectively.

Smart space-saving design: integrating the microwave above the prep counter frees up crucial workspace on the countertops, ensuring a clutter-free environment.

A space adjacent to the mudroom houses a GE spacesaver microwave, and the homeowners espresso maker and toaster. The room adjacent to the kitchen is a flexible space for a breakfast nook as well as some comfy seating.
