We are converting our attic into a loft, but have been told we can't do a ladder because it doesn't meet code. Must be a ladder. How do get around this?

what is the height of the stairs up to the loft? Also interested in total width of the bedroom area?
I love the stairs to the loft!! Do you know how many stairs there are and the distance from the wall on the right to the top stair? We have 7.4 feet
