The old basement was a warren of random rooms with low bulkheads crisscrossing the space. A laundry room was awkwardly located right off the family room and blocked light from one of the windows. We reconfigured/resized the ductwork to minimize the impact on ceiling heights and relocated the laundry in order to expand the family room and allow space for a kid's art corner. The natural wood slat wall keeps the stairway feeling open and is a real statement piece; additional space was captured under the stairs for storage cubbies to keep clutter at bay.

This project was designed, and developed by Rhodes Architecture + Light while Josh Meharry was a team member. After seeing this roof design the clients dubbed their new house “Garuda” after the Hindu Demi-God with wings so large they darkened the sky, and the name stuck. These clients were a couple who were wanting a house for them and their dogs that could also house each of their parents who came often to visit them from India for prolonged stays. They wanted to have plenty of common space for everyone to spend time together as well as a sense of privacy between each of the three bedroom suites. The resulting design consists of two lower “plinths”, each one housing one of the parent’s ensuite bedrooms which open onto private exterior patios in the rear yard. The upper level that bridges over and cantilevers beyond the lower plinths contains the communal living spaces and the couple’s bedroom suite, while the tops of the lower plinths then become roof decks for the spaces above. The void between the lower plinths serves as the primary entrance, and this space opens into a double height space with skylights that draw you up and make you feel connected to the upper living spaces despite the level change. Other unique spaces and elements were integrated into the design at the client’s request such as a Puja (prayer) room that opened into a screened exterior landscape area with a small fountain, as well as a rock climbing wall in the interior entrance atrium. The garage was tucked below and accessed from the side to keep the doors largely out of view, and a large movie room was also integrated on the lowest level. The clients requested natural and warm materials, which lead to exposing the concrete floors throughout the interior and the use of corten rusting steel panels on the exterior of the lower plinths and wood soffits at the roof and underside of the upper floor.

Working in small or awkward spaces is often the most rewarding because the problem solving required calls on one’s creativity. The slanted ceiling nook in this tween bedroom is a great example of how to turn a demerit into an asset. Instead of trying to ignore it, the feature is played up here with the bold stripe treatment. The nook’s utility is maximized by using a corner desk and creating custom wood shelves affixed to the wall using plumbing piping. Storage space remained a challenge in the room, and if we added a tall storage unit to the wall where one could fit, we would be blocking the light and views of the windows. The solution was to create a long, built-in bench with drawer storage below and two long wooden shelves, higher up the wall, for books and personal items. To bring in an industrial vibe and complement the iron bed, we distressed the wood and used plumbing pipes and fixtures for shelf support. Photography by Ken Wyner 2101 Connecticut Avenue (c.1928), an 8-story brick and limestone Beaux Arts style building with spacious apartments, is said to have been “the finest apartment house to appear in Washington between the two World Wars.” (James M. Goode, Best Addresses, 1988.) As advertised for rent in 1928, the apartments were designed “to incorporate many details that would aid the residents in establishing a home atmosphere, one possessing charm and dignity usually found only in a private house… the character and tenancy (being) assured through careful selection of guests.” Home to Senators, Ambassadors, a Vice President and a Supreme Court Justice as well as numerous Washington socialites, the building still stands as one of the undisputed “best addresses” in Washington, DC.) So well laid-out was this gracious 3,000 sf apartment that the basic floor plan remains unchanged from the original architect’s 1927 design. The organizing feature was, and continues to be, the grand “gallery” space in the center of the unit. Every room in the apartment can be accessed via the gallery, thus preserving it as the centerpiece of the “charm and dignity” which the original design intended. Programmatic modifications consisted of the addition of a small powder room off of the foyer, and the conversion of a corner “sun room” into a room for meditation and study. The apartment received a thorough updating of all systems, services and finishes, including a new kitchen and new bathrooms, several new built-in cabinetry units, and the consolidation of numerous small closets and passageways into more accessible and efficient storage spaces.

Design ideas for a mediterranean landscaping in Other.

Conceived of as a C-shaped house with a small private courtyard and a large private rear yard, this new house maximizes the floor area available to build on this smaller Palo Alto lot. An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) integrated into the main structure gave a floor area bonus. For now, it will be used for visiting relatives. One challenge of this design was keeping a low profile and proportional design while still meeting the FEMA flood plain requirement that the finished floor start about 3′ above grade. The new house has four bedrooms (including the attached ADU), a separate family room with a window seat, a music room, a prayer room, and a large living space that opens to the private small courtyard as well as a large covered patio at the rear. Mature trees around the perimeter of the lot were preserved, and new ones planted, for private indoor-outdoor living.
