I would not choose brown with gray walls, what room is this in?

Hardwood or stained concrete. Carpet is a waste of money and a health hazard.

Thanks for your input! Yes a stone color would be nice. It's going up the stairs, upstairs hallway and bedrooms .

I'm getting dark hardwood floors installed and am thinking of having cabinets painted white and getting dark countertops. Thoughts?? Would black be a good color choice for counters?

I'm glad you're going with wood. I think you will be happy in the long run. Contrast will make things look better. I probably would not go with stark white cabinets but a shade off (not cream though). My favorite countertops are stone with some contrast with darks and lights in it. If you have not seen polished concrete countertops do a google search. They look awesome.
