New sideboard...help please

Our new sideboard is almost 42" tall. What would look best on top and on the wall? I'd like to have a mirror, but I think it would have to be hung too high and wouldn't look right. Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated.

Recently had the same situation. We added wallpaper and mirror. The mirror is 4" above the sideboard. Note, we constantly change out the groupings.

The proportions here are off, to me, a round or oval mirror might work better, or perhaps in place of a mirror, couple of small prints side by side would add a nice splash of color.

Centre the sideboard on the wall and then hang a round mirror as Sandi suggests - but it should be at least 2-3" smaller than the sideboard - go for dark wood frame or same brushed nickel as hardware. Or change the hardware and glam it up. Remove everything on the sideboard and put one larger bowl for example in the middle. Hope this helps. Good luck from Montreal!

The photo with wallpaper and mirror are totally out of proportion like Sandi said. Please paint that air return it is jarring. A round mirror and two or three larger accessories can be on sideboard. You have way to much now. If you use a sideboard as a server it is a pain to move all those things. So be practical too. You could try to find a large decorative bowl perhaps for the center that can be easily moved, add a sculpture or something else. Boxes can be nice too, look at shelter magazines if you get stuck.

Yes paint out the air return as G&W advise - don't know how I missed that!

Wow! This was my first foray into the world of Houzz. Like the average self decorator, I was not looking for advice from self righteous design firms. I believe I will continue to read and admire the works of other home decorators who are learning how to make their homes beautiful and comfortable, and "retire" from the posting of pictures!

Oh please don't! I really think it was an oversight as your space was so similar that they thought you were the same person who was asking for their advice. It is a nice group of people (I see the same names on most of the forums and everyone is just trying to help). Take heart:)

b27ert.....so sorry that happened to you and hope you will reconsider as lots of discussions are just so much fun for everyone.

Just wondering what a mirror would reflect if you used one here? Sometimes mirrors are quick fixes to fill in the space, but then they do not really work???

Is this a part of your foyer and is that the use you have for it? I love this piece. Great size and color and can see so many directions to go.
Yes, it is part of a small condo foyer. The piece is only 10" wide and 36" high to fit in this small space.

I am all for mirrors esp in a small condo.
I would paint the vent the same colour as the wall, move the sideboard to the left so that it is off centre and hang an oval mirror over it.
A nice lush potted palm under the vent. beside the sideboard.

I'm the one who posted for advice& am a little confused because I'm not sure if some of the suggestions are for me or the first person who tried to help. My sideboard is centered on the wall and is at one end of my open great room, which is open to the dining room & kitchen. There are window at the other end of the great room so a mirror would, IMO, give the illusion of another window. But with the height of the sideboard at 42", I'm not sure if that's too tall for a mirror to be above it. The idea of paint the white vent is good; thanks.

Windows across from the mirror work. Do you have a piece of art you could even just prop there now to see what something on the wall would look like? And the size and shape could be adjusted then, too.

Could the vase and sticks sit on the floor in front of the vent?

Susfit99 - I think both of your walls (yours and b27ert) looked so similar that people thought it was the same house! And that you had wallpapered and were asking for opinions...

I'd hang a grouping of black and white photos or prints above this dresser but please leave a space of at least 250mm or 9 inches before the bottoms of the frames or use an inch above the candles. Make it an interesting mix but try and stay within the width dimension of your unit. 2 or 3 would make it look comfortable.

I really like the way the hardware and candlesticks' finish pop on the color of this piece; so a round, metallic mirror that is sized and placed well over this piece should look lovely. Replacing the the ceramics with one silver/nickel toned bowl would coordinate the focus on metallic sparkle in this setting.

Please add updated pics as your project develops. It's so fun and helpful to so many of us to read the feedback on all the choices and details that go into these projects. Sometimes there is a bit of confusion or hard edged comments, but most readers and advisors really like your home, your choices, and project ideas or they wouldn't take the time to follow the discussion.

I hope you have fun with it and share more projects with us.

Thank you. If the piece of furniture is 40" wide, what would be the correct dimension for a round/oval mirror? Would you center directly over the piece? How many inches above the piece should it be hung?
6 inches above the piece is perfect and I would center it. The size should be close to 2/3 of the 40 inches to be in proportion.

Here's what I came up with. Got the deal of the century on the mirror and love it. Just got the silver bowl today as someone suggested.

Gotta love deals on things....especially when they look THIS NICE! I love what you did here!!!
Love it! Where did you get the sideboard? I'm looking for one that height.

Are you going to paint out the vents to match the wall? That would make it really nice.
