Do you have electricity anywhere around there? Might be fin to have those willow sticks with twinkle lights incorporated sticking up.

I would do something non planty like chromatic says. But if you are going to do a plant I would do a succulent, they are hardy and don't require much maintenance... Like a small agave..

It is better to put that planter back outside with the garden gnomes.

Low light level plants may survive for a while. You can buy inexpensive philodendrons, then keep some in bright light elsewhere to swap around every few weeks. That being said, I would remove the rock planters. Some ideas just didn't work out.

How about using it as a pedestal for a sculpture?

We painted ours white to match the fireplace, then had a kitchen store make us a marble top. How hard would it be to get rid of them? I might just do that if I were you, if you really love them, how about facing the wall below them with more stone?

HI --- I would have removed them immediately , they are not very attractive and serve no esthetic value . This looks like some ones DIY project to fill a little empty space . Sorry but these are ugly !!

This is not the time to take them out. They are part of the structure of the stairs etc. and the area is in good condition, but next time you have to renovate the floor or stairs etc. I think the idea of topping them with black granite is excellent. And then use them to display art sculpture or statues.....

In fact, you could actually cover them in another stone. They are growing on me as a way to add art to the space. But now I see there are 3?

Box them in with wood that matches the floor, then put low light plants on top.

Now that I look closer, you can't recover them. It would be too hard to do it on the railing side. You can see that in the first picture. I would do the granite tops. And I think the whole room scene would look better painted grey.
