Replace or restore

Should I paint, or strip and stain grey, to go into a new house that has grey stained oak floors? This solid oak dining room set is seen in my basement for the last 10 yrs since we don't have a dining room in our present house. It was custom made for a spanish style home in the 70's. Should I just get rid of it?

i think the answer is purely a matter of taste. ask yourself, regardless of the fact that you've had it for years and it was custom made....does this furniture reflect your personal style? styles and tastes change throughout the years. I inherited a similar-era dark wood, chunky DR set, but found, even after i had painstakingly refinished it, that it was just too bulky, awkward and overwhelming in my space and didn't fit my personal style, so, I sold it and put the proceeds towards new furniture that I liked better. if you LOVE this set, keep it. if you don't absolutely LOVE it anymore, don't feel badly, replace it.

It is a beautiful set btw. I would keep it if it were mine. The warm wood tones will pop beautifully against grey walls and floors. You could reupholster the seats on the chairs and get rid of the hutch portion so that way you will have a beautiful sideboard to dress up with tall candlebras and something organic like a green plant.

Add a teal patterned rug and it will be a gorgeous dining room

Love the idea of a teal patterned rug since I have 2 teal color leather love seats. I am definitely getting rid of the hutch. I also would like a bench on one side of the table. Great for the 4 grandsons. I'll see what the table looks like with the grey floors, and the grey walls ( silver fox by Benjamin Moore). Then I'll decide whether or not to keep the chairs and have them reupholstered.

Yes chemayne! Thought of covering the whole back of the chairs just like the seat. I'll get a quote to see if it's worth it. Might be more expensive than buying new chairs. But I do like the legs of the chairs.

New chairs may look nice with that table.... Will help modernize the space without having to replace the table.

It's not too hard to upholster those seats if you are somewhat handy, you can buy patterned fabric that you like and do it yourself. Otherwise if you already have two teal loveseats try putting them on each side of the table and add some grey and green cushions. If that looks good you only have to reupholster two head chairs.

Since you asked.....scrap the chairs at a minimum. There is no salvaging those heavy, awkward and bizarre chairs.

The table is the only piece worth saving in my opinion. If you had a dinning room and could use the table I would pair them with upholstered parsons chair.

As soon as I saw the picture I thought I'd get rid of the hutch and the four side chairs and go from there. The chairs are odd looking, even for 1970s spanish.

There has to be someone out there that would just love those chairs. I'm not one of them. The fact that they are unusual is in your favor. Someone into southwest decor might flip over them. I agree you should keep the very nice table and go from there.

Is the hutch 2 pieces? Perhaps you could repurpose the bottom piece by painting.
