Countertop color help!

We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen. We have existing tile(wife wants to keep) that runs througout the kitchen(backsplash) and breakfast area(walls wainscot height). We are replacing outdated oak cabinets with new maple cabinets in a seashell color with a pewter glaze. We are trying to come up with a countertop color that will work with the existing tile and new cabinets. We are open to different types of material for the countertop. The only material we would like to stay away from is marble, as we have two preschoolers and my wife does not want to deal with the added upkeep.
