Instead of red go the teal shades, like peacock, turquoise, mix up prints and solid using these colors. Also,add animal prints like leopard, to pillow mix. If wanting to something on chairs go a solid cream, a fur throw in the shades of cream would work just on one chair.

I would need to see the other furniture to advise you on accent colours/patterns. Can you post photos?

Nancy...our family room is teal and I'd like to avoid the same color throughout the house.

Change the Area Rug for Sisal or any Natural fiber. Change the direction of how the rug is placed. The rug is too small.

Red accents? nono.

The rug is being replaced with an 8x10 white shag rug, the sample is next to the chair on the floor. Our teal family room has a sisal rug and I'm trying to avoid duplicating the look in our formal living room.

Thank you grover....I'm looking for something eclectic, I love abstract art and bold colors. We are going for a more modern look, the couch arms are too big and the tables are too harsh on the eyes. I'm looking for something inviting, modern and comfortable.

Totally got sucked into "giraffe" houzz searches LOL. I saw these geometric pillows that might be another geometric pattern that would be fun, but really, I have to admit, it was the doggie that won my heart.

Actually yes! I think mixing patterns is ok, and the Giraffe has larger patterns than the ottomans so it would create some interest. :)

There's not alot of giraffe used in homes, mostly zebra and leopard which is why we went with these chairs.

How about throw pillows on the sofa? I know the eye needs a place to rest as well.

Anything in black and white, and anything in kuba or mud cloth:

I would stick to a neutral colour scheme (cream, beige, tan, black, etc.) and use pattern to make it interesting. I would not add orange or teal (like the totem pillows) to a tan sofa in this room. It should be sophisticated but interesting. So get graphic cushions in the palette mentioned (I like what Groveraxle proposed above) and some interesting artwork/mirrors and/or black and white photos. Here's my own living room which is in this very palette with a pop of yellow for effect. Perhaps this will inspire you to create your own look (if you want pop of colour then red will work yes). Do you like this kind of abstract art? Could be very effective above your tan sofa (is tan sofa leather or fabric - and what style?)... And about introducing a pop of colour - would you consider yellow? It would work with your existing artwork and dining room...

I just glanced at your Art idea book. If you want to introduce bold and large scale artwork you definitely have the space for it. I would advise you to stick with one accent colour in different shades/textures versus multi-colours. So red or yellow could work. Hope this helps! Good luck!
