The cabinets are fine, I love the green, and I don't mind the art, but what's wrong is the chandelier. (And the dreadful color of the dining room, but you already know that!)

Hi Green Girl, I'm a green girl too. Your kitchen's great; here's an idea to consider. I love the image of the room that ciscomom4 posted; it shows what I was going to suggest: paint the dining room in green instead but keep the kitchen a lighter more neutral color (maybe a pale greenish-yellow or a light taupe) to balance out the contrast in your cabinets. For example, using ciscomom4's color chips, imagine using "Fernwood green" in the kitchen, then using "Grass" in the dining room beyond (the second 2 chips, top and bottom). Get the idea? Putting the olive in the dining room instead will draw your eye beyond the kitchen and benefit both rooms. Sometimes we forget to see the big picture when we're decorating; think of what your eye sees as the canvas, not just the room itself. We have a similar concept in our home. Our living room is first, which is more neutral, and the dining room is beyond, with a green feature wall which can be seen from both rooms (and I agree with the comments that said your artwork is fine but your chandelier must go, lol! Your kitchen's Modern now, but that fixture is Colonial). I hope that helps. I'll send pics if the idea isn't clear :)

The DR and LR and the rest are all painted SW Ultra White. It's the first time I've ever had white walls.

I think I am getting hung up because green is my favorite color. We painted the office a similar but lighter version of this and I think that may be enough to keep me happy.

I like the Farrow and Ball colors suggested. The adjacent room has 2 terra cotta stressless chairs, and mushroom gray sofa. I used a blue gray rug and a navy blue accent wall behind a natural wood media center. It's all too much. I think I need to rethink this space.

Thank goodness I love the bedroom! That's turning out stunning. Yayyy! One for the home team.

I like your green wall, but please replace all of the permanent items on the counter (fewer than what’s there now) with objects in shades of green.
I like your fruit and veg pics, but they don’t make it on the green wall. I like the idea of 1 large black and white on the green and find a different spot for the others.
Possibly painting your chandelier would save it. Maybe very dark green?

@sarahmiller those pix really help to visualize the dr in the back. I also like the change in lighting. I've been playing w the SW app, but it is nowhere as nice as what you are doing.

And the more I see and read all the suggestions, I can see how changing out the accessories on the counter will make it more to my ideal.

I've seen Houzz pix with the navy green white theme and I like it. Hope to post more pix. But I'm playing with a softer more muted bluer green.

I love the cabinets, the countertops, the art and I love the green! I would have gone with a lighter and brighter green tone. The one ciscomom4 suggested is very nice.

If you don't want to paint the green wall just yet, start with the dining room. As you can see from the samples above, the dining room wall color can really make the green pop. I like the fuschia above and the purple and yellow groveraxle suggested.

Last, the gold chandelier in the kitchen does not fit this space. At this point, any contemporary fixture is much better than the one you have now. Good luck.

For $141, I think this is fresh, modern and a bit sophisticated;) It would be nice with the black and white photo's on the wall;)

I know most people say to change out your chandelier for something more modern, sleek and probably black, but really isn't that the normal expected thing to do? I like your kitchen. It looks like it has been worked on over time. I am not a lover of brass chandeliers, but when I looked at your room, it made me smile. Something different, hallelujah! Paint that dining room and let's see what you've got! Okay, now that I have gotten that off my chest, please do what your heart tells you. It is your kitchen after all (go figure). Sometimes when I read all the comments, and boy they are good comments, my head goes a spinning. You have good design sense plus an abundance of good advice. Whatever you decide will be lovely as you have started with "good bones" in your kitchen.

If its pears that you like then pears you should have ...only in a more modern setting ,something fresh looking I say :)

Wow - what a lot of responses you've gotten! I am inspired by your brilliant green wall. To make it "work" better - I'd lose the red accessories on the counter in favor of white or green. Add some greenery - maybe a plant (basil?) to balance some of the green. 'Not sure if you have a kitchen table in there, but some green placemats would be nice too. :)

I like the green! I'm thinking it might be too harsh for the kitchen though. Since you have white and dark cabinets, it might help keeping the walls a little less vibrant, but still adding the pop of color you want. I think that'll make it sophisticated you were looking for without doing too much, and having too many things going on. There's a lot of great examples of pictures if you search "green kitchen walls" in the top search bar on this website, but heres one I found that might go well-it's only an accent in this photo, but obviously you could make it your whole wall. Another thing to add to this is think that's a great idea is the idea of putting an accent line through the middle. Good luck!!

I agree with Shannon that green might be a bit too harsh for a kitchen. Neutral colors for kitchens are always a good option.

Green is cheerful and healthy, remember to eat your veggies :)

The wall's perfect. The light fixture is the only problem with this space.

It's amazing how you can see what you like and don't like from a 2 D pic. I was resistant to the comments on the chandy. Looking again at the pix, I concur, it must go. Sad, it's been with me 30 years. Hard to part.

Hi Again, Greengirl. I'd posted the comment about moving the green to the dining room, but using a softer, less harsh tone for the kitchen, to even out the contrast between the cabinet colors (and Shannon Fleming agrees too!) . I'd mentioned that we did a similar treatment in our home, with our living and dining rooms: here's a picture of the two rooms I spoke of (also with a modern chandelier):

We used the green wall and the plants to draw the eye through the two rooms and unify them. Judging by all the responses you received, seems lots of us like green too :) I hope this helps!

I think you could work with the green since you like it. How about a classic or even modern stencil in a tone on tone color to give it some dimension. Something like this?

@klas1 that looks like an ochre chandelier. We used a smaller version of that in our MBR bath. Love it. Tomorrow we will put up the new pics on that wall. I love the mehndi stencil and have their rooms in my ideabooks too. Going to do something like that in office.

Are the cabinets ebony. If so, I would suggest a very light grey wall for the kitchen and perhaps a shade darker for the adjoining room. The grey will tie in the top and bottom cabinets. The chandelier is too traditional for the room and I would prefer a simple wall mount fixture in white or black. I would add color to the kitchen by getting a nice colorful rug. If an adjoining room has blue grey and rust, u might want to pick up these colors in the rug.

I think the wall color is too bright and strong to be sophisticated. Toned down, softer and more muted complex colors.

If you don't want to part with chandelier you can refresh it. Paint with spray paint color you like, I see it white, or green, and only bulb plates can be opposite color, but don't do too much mix. Also you can buy in big box store (Home Depot) tiny lamp shades you can put right on bulbs (no extra devises needed, very simple, wear like hat). White shades can be embellished at the bottom with a trim emerald green beads/stones attached with hot glue. It will look fairly modern (painted) and very whimsical, unique. There no such rule to go all slick modern. Though red and green are complimentary colors it also looks like Christmas theme, so I would take out all red accessories, white, wood, any natural will be better. Kitchen looks lovely, just need some touches.

Bottom cabinets are not espresso, they're lighter called mink. We were stuck with the fridge. I had shades on the bulbs but took off because it looked too stuffy. And no rugs in kitchen due to bad hip and DH hates them. And I think I would like a softer, bluer green more like the Farrow Ball color.

Before you give up on your chandelier, paint it another shade of green or any other color (perhaps a different shade of your dining room?) and see what you think. 30 years is a lifetime - a score and a half - 3 decades. Don’t give up!

Since the ideas of painting your chandelier and using a softer wall color have been proposed, I thought a visual might be helpful. (You asked earlier - the software is called Photoshop.) The painted chandelier look is "fun and quirky". Your kitchen is more on the "sophisticated, contemporary chic" side. To my eye, these two clash. Regarding your chandelier - if you walk in the kitchen, notice your chandelier, and are flooded with wonderful memories, then it is still serving its purpose. I have some of my parents' furnishings in my home - dated and they clash with my other decor, but I feel my parents' presence with those items in the room - so they stay and I love them.

Hi there! Adding color to any space in your house is always a challenge. As an artist I know that the main color should be repeated three times. This can be as simple as adding a green pattern jar to the counter top, a painting in your dining room which has the green in it or possibly a small rug by the sink with the green in it. It's a quick fix and fun! Good luck

I think you would achieve more sophistication for the kitchen and the dining room by adding more decorative moldings in both places. How about some crown moldings and chair rail on the green wall in the kitchen and in the dining room? It will liven up the area most definitely!

I love the color Mink (I'm thinking Sherwin Williams?). If you like the Farrow and Ball color, you could look at Sherwin Williams Agate Green.

Looks great Doctornancy! I love Photoshop too. At first I agreed with everyone's assessment of the chandelier, and I also thought greengirl should go modern. But if the sentimental value is important, painting it actually could work, along with adding crystal drops and strands. Black would take it out of "quirky" and into "sophisticated" (see photo)! This could work on a lighter green wall; either a cooler light blue-green or a lighter version of ciscomom4's agate...

Then Genevleve's simple sophisticated single pear print above in a modern black, dark wood or pewter-finish frame would work well... I agree that it's definitely about decorating with things you love though...

That sounds like good sense - especially as a clock (a real one, not the one on your microwave) is an important item in any kitchen. I agree about the veggie pix. Maybe the clock could have a wood frame, though. Some green food prep dishes and bowls would help the wall too. Going into the dining room - how about a green tablecloth? Paired with white china, this would look fresh and would carry the green theme to its logical conclusion.

Remove the wall and open it up. I love green but it's not the best shade. I think it will be hard to find a bright color to tie in with black and white cabinets. The warmth of the green wall and the artwork are beautiful but it does not fit with the more sterile look of black and white. I'd like to see what you finally decide to do.

Funny you ask. The painter is doing the outside of house. Changed pictures on wall. Found a glass backsplash too. The wall will be repainted in a brighter green. Both should be done soon. I will post. Also reprinting adjoining family room/den.

Remove the fruit pictures and add contemporary artwork maybe white with black etchings or a white oversized contemporary clock with black numbers - Add a white subway tile backsplash. I would replace the light fixture with something contempoary or paint your current fixture black or white and trade out the current light bulbs for contempoary style

Another option would be to re paint the green to a softer organic hue. With a softer green hue I think the fruit wall art can still be used. If you repaint to a softer hue the same suggestions for light fixture / back splash still stands

if you want to keep everything as it currently is..... Choose a different backslash other than white ( maybe brick style ) for an eclectic look ....

One quick and easiest fix is to just trade out the light fixture for a contempoary one with substance .... Since the one there is sentimental use it in another room.... Just relocate it!

I also suggest painted the dining room wall that is facing the kitchen opening a bright color

Green doesn't bother me, it's the white -I'd go for a linen on the upper cabs.

I like your green but if you want something different, you should try it. The one thing I wouldn't do is use a glossy paint.

Love the green, it just needs to be more pear-green like in the art. Match that, paint it again, see if that works.

You also need to consider the paint in the next room so the two room colors do not clash. It's difficult to determine actual paint color from photographs.

I would consider trying: new pictures, a new light fixture, and streamlining the accessories on the counter. Also, what is the big black thing around the refrigerator? Is that a wall painted black? I cannot tell from the photo.

Well, thanks all. We decided to sell the house. Just wasn't us and nothing we did made it feel like ours. We're moving shortly. I may have some new and different issues, but I've learned so much with all your help. Oh, and the chandelier will be painted and moved into master bedroom. And no more fruit pics.
