I was taking the pic from the stairs...but here is from the front doorish, and lastly, from the hall.

You have a lovely room and lovely furniture. It looks peaceful. I may be wrong but I took Belle Chaise to mean your French Doors on the row of windows. I actually had the same reaction as the pictures make the room a bit narrow for all of the furniture in that position.
It looks like you are making the windows your focal point. Have you tried to place the sofa on the wall with the picture overhead and make that your focal point? I will love to see how you work it out.

Too many pillows on the sofa , if you are having gray and white striped drapes I would like to see more connection to the drapes in the pillows so i would ditch the gold ones. I agree the sofa will look better on the wall with the painting hung at the right height behind it and the chairs facing the sofa. I would look for an area rug with a little more color for some reason I keep wanting to see some blue in this space. As for a coffee table a nice iron and glass or wood and glass would work so you see the rug and the little bench could find a new home. Never put furniture in front of operable doors it always looks wrong.

I agree with the others, rotate your furniture 90 degrees ccw. The couch back on the wall, the two chairs across from it. The couch, where it currently is, feels too out of place, too much in the foyer. The glass doors can be more of a feature in your room, instead of covered by the chairs.

Try the couch against the wall, but also pulled away from the wall, with the sofa table behind it, for lamps or something. Personally I prefer furniture off the walls.

I would try that bench ottoman looking piece as your ottoman/table.

And I would also try your couch back towards the dining table, with sofa table behind it, and your chairs on the wall side, with something on the wall.

If your sofa table doesn't work with whatever layout you end up with regard to couch placement, you can probablu use it in the entry. Is that a mirror I see, reflecting the piano? You can maybe place the table in front of mirror?

From the stairs:). I like the furniture floating...it looks light and clean. I also agree...too many pillows. The accessories will be fixed ...no worries...but please give me all you've got. I completely appreciate it. The suns not quite up and out here in San Diego, but in an hour or so the sun will come streaming in and the whole thing will look so much better:). Please continue to comment on this work in progress. As you can see, I'm an eager student:)

Is this the formal living room? Your dining table seats 8, but this room seats 4. And yes, sofa against wall, console w/lamps behind it. The piano bench/ottoman need to go, not enough weight. Good luck!

That looks much better! Place the console behind the sofa and accessorize with the painting above. Shop for an oval-round glass topped coffee table with a three-larger accessories to keep it airy. The color grey will expand the sense of space the warm tones will tend to close it in. Horizontal grey-beige drapes would give some flow to the space. Keep the space simple to keep a contemporary edge.

Just that side of the room, but I will figure out couch side ASAP... Marc, is there a way to add more seating that would be an easy fix? We never really sit in this room, it's more for "pretty", and our table actually seats 10. Does that seem dumb? I have a large family room that seats 10, so we never really bother. Any thoughts? Yea, I think I like it without the sofa table. Maybe if it were up against the wall, and the couch scooched back, the table would work. But, floating, it kind of looks too squishy. Depending on what coffee table/ottoman you go with, you might need to push couch backwards, to make walking room around furniture. If so, I would try the table & couch on the wall. If not, leave it floating. Nice work!

If you entertain a lot, you might want to keep that sofa table on hand, to use as a bar/appetizer area. An area for mingling before dinner.

I agree I t's too tight with the sofa table behind the sofa, I concur it's better without it. I would pull it out and push the sofa back about half way and move the chairs back equal distance so the space is symmetrical to the French doors. I would lean towards a round or oval coffee table with legs in a metalic finish and glass to maintain spaciousness and bring in a little bling. An ottoman could work if it has legs, but may look too heavy. Possibly more appropriate for the family room than the living room. Think about how you'll use the space and make it wok for you. I do like the furnishing and space you have to work with!

I will try that! I have gotten the BEST advice from you all:). I am so completely grateful;). I was thinking of putting a black interesting import piece (coffee table)....maybe a opium table with a glass top. But now I will also try a round coffee table or ottoman as well. I will post the choices and hope you all will weigh in.

I like the look of opium tables but in a tight space they can be terrible ankle bangers! Also they tend to be low slung which is great for a home with standard height ceilings. I tend to think a more upright-taller coffee table is in order with the height of your sofa and chairs. I shop consignment places to find great bargains. I've had great luck on EBay. I find more unique pieces at good prices, and tend to change things out because I don't feel married to them by their cost. Have fun shopping!

The coffee table you identified liking is Baker Thomas Pheasant Modern Contemporary Oval Coffee Table 7855 Traditional Classic. It comes in several finish choices. You can locate a local dealer on their web site. The sofa they show it with in the room scene is nearly identical to yours in design and color which will help you visualize. The size seems to be a little small. Remember, the ideal distance is 18" from cushion to coffee table at closest point! no less than one foot. 20" is the outside limit. The table height should be within 2" above or below cushion height, I personally prefer the table be slightly lower than the cushion. So you can now see how the coffee table will determine the balance of your furniture placement. The proportion of your coffee table purchase is key! Take your time, and happy shopping!

I kind of want to flip the couch and the chairs. The sofa table behind the couch could then double as a extra buffet table when needed (think drink station, etc.) and the chairs could be placed more at an angle.

I would place the sofa on the right wall to 'open up' the living space. It will make the room look bigger. If you want, you could move the two chairs off the windows and put them opposite from the sofa.

And the table behind the sofa can be moved to where the chairs are (the window/doors).

Thank you for your additional suggestions. The new configuration has been a big improvement. But I will definitely use the console behind the chairs for bigger dinner parties as a second buffet or a "dessert table" or the like. This is a brilliant add on idea:)
