Kitchen layout: peninsula or island?

We're planning to re-do our kitchen but aren't sure what to do with this odd-shaped space. We plan to remove the corner pantry, so that corner will be square, but we'll still have the angle where the sink is. We want the prep space and seating area of an island, but are considering whether a peninsula is a better option. The images show the kitchen and also the space adjacent to it. Any suggestions?

The shape of the kitchen seems to go with the house, so I am wondering why you want to take out the pantry? My first concern is where you are going to put everything that is in the pantry. Do you plan to put cabinets in the new area?
From the photo it appears that the problem with the pantry isn't the shape, but the color of the area. Is it the same color as the rest of the room? It doesn't appear to be from the photo. If it is the same color then there is a light issue that is causing it to appear to be lighter. Perhaps if it were painted a slightly darker color it would blend better with the room, and you would like it more. The shape of the room is attractive, so it would be nice if you could work with it.

Thanks for your comment, mfwolfe. All the walls and trim are the same white - must just be the light and the amateur photography making it look like a different colour. We've given lots of thought to storage and the pantry isn't in question (it's coming out). The debate right now is island vs peninsula. Actually, there's one other consideration - where to stash the tv and all our electronics (phones, docking station, laptop, etc.) that end up being charged on the counter top under the window. I'd love to tuck those away somewhere.

Sorry but I agree when you remove the pantry the symetry in this space is going to be OFF why not paint the pantry doot the same color as the cabinets so it looks like what it is, part of the cabinetry. As for all the stuff on the counter why not put a shallow cabinet in the hallway and put all that stuff in there, you have plugs there so don't even have to get an electrician.

I would definitely keep the island over a peninsula. The peninsula would chop off the room too much. I am not a fan of corner pantries at all. I'm assuming that you will replace it with both upper and bottom cabinets. It will make your room seem larger.

Sorry, I like the kitchen as it is... symmetrical, and lots of storage, and with an island! The angle of the pantry compliments the angle of the window. I couldn't IMAGINE ripping out that storage, but if you do, I would at least keep the angle, and do counters to mirror the other side. But, obviously, it's your house! :O)

A peninsula limits flow more so than an island, IMHO. More people can fit around it, stand around it chit chatting, move around it, and move out of your way. Peninsula might cause more traffic jams.
