One idea is to cover it with a room-sized area rug (9x12 or so).

What is under the rug? One time I had a similar dilemma and I pulled up the carpeting and painted the floorboards antique white. It was good for a few years...looked kind of shabby chic. The house was older so there were actual floorboards as opposed to plywood.

My current house I pulled up carpet in the bedroom and put down vinyl squares (until my old dog passed - he couldn't help himself at the end). That was cheap and easy. And they came up easy when they needed to.
