Not a very clear shot of the table, but how about something like this for your space?

I keep going back and forth on white. I think it might look OK in the space, I'm just not sure we are cottage-y white table people. My ideal would be a kind of rustic picnic-y trestle table, but I don't like the benches and I'm not sure that more light wood will work in here.

I think I'd embrace the cherry but add upholstered or leather chairs and an area rug. Doing so will break up the strong wood element of the space by introducing color, pattern and texture.

Another option is opaque glass like this one - but might not be very child friendly.

I think for me what's throwing me off with the current table is that it is so dark with everything else being much lighter. I like the idea of an area rug perhaps, but usually discourage these in main eating areas for practical reasons.

I think that if the table had a little more character to it, the colour of wood would be less significant. Another thought is a wood-top table with metal legs, similar to the one in the attached photo or the following link:



I think as well as that the glass-top console table should be removed. It doesn't fit well with the rest of the room - not enough substance to it. Another "quick fix" would be to add some colour and solid items to the built-in cabinets - this would help to tone down the amount of wood that the eye sees by breaking it up a bit.

The console table is absolutely going to go. (Note: This is the picture of the current owner's furniture. We move in a couple of months). I think the coloring in this picture is a little distorted....The current table is actually black and the wall unit and floors are cooler color than they show. Here's a color adjusted photo.

How do you guys feel about one of these options?

Probably would have to rework the chairs since I don't want upholstered chairs for child friendliness.

You might consider an oval table to soften the rectangular lines present in your Shaker-style cabinets and moldings.

Some great suggestions by previous posters, spot on needing an area rug, more texture etc. I rather liked this set up here in first pic, even though they are classic Windsor chairs they look a little more modern in a dark finish. The bonus with windsor chairs, is that you may add chair pads to cushion your tuschy. You can also throw them into the wash for easy cleaning, make sure that's a stain resistant fabric.Would definitely go a more rustic table top...due to the wee ones in your family! Beyond the Stage Homes has a valid regarding area rug placement an alternative might be to do a runner leading from dining area to kitchen as shown in 2nd link! At a later date might want check out chandelier options, maybe something a little larger with a fabric shade? Just a suggestion...I'd hold tight till you settled on your dining room set! Good luck!

Hmmm, just checked out the cecelia table, think it's too white washed for the wooden elements in your room. I know how you feel concerning a totally white table, so I'd go wood. I'd select a patterned area rug underneath to disguise dirt, and perhaps the odd stray meatball! Good luck!

So much wood in the room. if you are asking me I would buy a painted wood table and upholstered chairs in a fun fabric. Some company's have copper top table which are pretty cool too. Anything but a stained wood or black.

I think if you do try some fabric in the area--either chairs covered in sunbrella fabrics--won't stain -just wipe off or an outdoor rug underneathe the table. I know when I first bought my house in MI I thought I was in a forest with wood cabinets,table and floor!! Good luck!

You CAN do a rug in the dining room, even with little ones. This option from FLOR would look lovely with your traditional built ins and it will soften all that wood.

Check out their website for more information. The 19" square products are made from recycled and reclaimed materials. Carpet on top, rubber on the bottom. Easy to spot clean, but if it does get ruined, you can send it back to the company and they will recycle it. And you simply replace with another square. The tiles come with large adhesive dots that attache the tiles to each other on the back. Easy peasy!

The reason I suggested white was that you already have two wood tones going in the floor and cabinetry. That said, I like Miss Cecelia very much.

FLOR is genius! I've never seen that before. What a great idea for a kid house! And I think if the wood floor is taken out of the equation I can be more open about my choice of table. Thanks a lot!

You definitely have to check out www.lakeandmountainhome.com. You can get a solid old oak or old pine table in any size you need and can customize the color. These are by far the easiest of all tables to care for! Just wipe with a damp sponge..
