With a lot of sweat equity and some financial investment, my husband and I managed to pull our 1970's kitchen into 2014. We did the majority of the work ourselves but did hire out installing the countertops and the vinyl tile floor. Still working on some final trim work in the eating area, but thought I'd share what we've done so far. Before picture taken right before we started demolition.
