kitchen update needed

last modified: 12 years ago
There are some things I love about my kitchen, unfortunately there are LARGE issues that I hate but not sure where to go with the materials/colors, etc. I hate the counter tops, flooring, sink. I am on the fence about the backsplash. Love the cabinets and size of the kitchen and the fact that I have a fireplace in the kitchen but it's so massive. Not sure if I can scale it down as there is another fireplace on the back of the brick wall in the living room. Love the "wine/vineyard" theme. Have the black and white checkered curtains/chair pads and the accent color of purple around the room, but it just seems outdated. Any thoughts? (see pics)

Can't really see the dining end very well, but I'd advise coordinating the lighting there and over the island. A fan blowing above food is not anything I'd want - cools the food and blows dust on it. Granite counter tops and a farm sink would look great. If your floors are hardwood, have them sanded and stained a darker color. To break up all the blond cabinetry, paint the island base to match the chairs, and do the same with the dining bench.
For a bigger project, paint the cabinets white or cream. Doesn't sound like you can do much about the FP except maybe add a different mantel, art above it and reduce the cluttered decor there. Painting the brick might be an option if you don't like the color.

Floors are old Pergo installed about 15 years ago (estimated) and HAVE TO GO! I am leaning towards a tile flooring. And I am definitely leaning towards granite. Just unsure about the color for these 2 items to coordinate with the cabinets. I think something darker to contrast? I am not painting the cabinets as I like that natural wood look. The fan is staying where it is. We eat at the large table at the opposite end of the kitchen. I agree about the clutter and have already started to remove items from the mantel. The dining room has lighting I am not fond of anyway and that's the next room to redo once I get the kitchen how I want it! Thanks for the feedback!

Some new lighting would work well to spruce up the existing design. Something similar to this kitchen we remodeled in NJ would work well for you. Good look with the project!

It's a little hard to advise without seeing the rest of your house (as it's nice to draw from a consistent pallette), but one way to go with the same cabinets is to push off of them more -- say, grey tile and a white-and-grey granite -- something like Gris Perla would let you tie in your black appliances a bit too, if you plan to keep them, while still allowing you choice of white or stainless sinks, etc. Changing pulls might also help to tie things together and give you a relatively inexpensive update.

Have you considered replacing/staining the cabinets?

I like the cabinets and in the interest of budget, they stay.

You should look at rustoleumtransformations.com - reasonable; requiring elbow grease and time but good results.

I'm mostly thinking the island could use a nice change of color, even if you leave the cabs. Sage green works well with the blond wood.
