Why does placing this under a flat screen television limit heater use?

Hi Sandi, The heat source is on top of the fireplace. It's placed just behind the glass on the top of the metal firebox. Due to the high intensity of heat coming from that vent, a flat screen TV placed within 24 inches of the fireplace could/would be damaged.
Our Onyx fireplaces now come with a master heat on/off switch on the back of the unit, which was designed for some customers who put the fireplace in a wall. You could turn off the heat from that master switch, and you would be OK as long as no one changes that switch setting.

Can this be inset into the wall?

This unit can be inset into the wall, however, you would have to disable the heater as the heat comes out through the top of the unit. There is a switch on the back of the unit that allows you to disable the heat before recessing the unit into the wall.
