I'm a sectional guy. I think love seats and chairs belong in formal living rooms and sectionals are for family rooms when lazing around watching a movie with the whole family. Given that you only have one living room like me, there are nice sectionals that also act as functionality and comfort.

Because you have a young family that likes to snuggle up, I'd go with the sectional. Instead of side tables, add two more armless sections so that you can have more seating. Eliminate one of the chairs, keeping the one in the corner. You could do a recliner that doesn't look like a recliner.

For family, I vote sectional. For guests, I vote two sofas. So you would need to determine how the room is most often used. But I have a question. When you say sofa, do you mean full sized sofa? Because the two sofas in your schematic look like two-seater loveseats to me. And loveseats are, IMO, the most useless piece of furniture ever made. So unless those can be actual 3 seater sofas (which means they will seat two guests comfortably, whereas a loveseat seats only one guest comfortably), the sofa option doesn't actually look better for guests.

While sectionals are comfy, they never work in another room if you ever move. Two sofas are much more interesting...especially if they are different rather than matching. You might consider swivel chairs for watching television comfortably. (I am assuming the tv will go above the fireplace). That said, if you can only fit two loveseats, I would go with a sectional.

HI --- I agree about love seats being a useless piece of furniture . Because your a young family I think the sectional and two chairs is the best . I have even considered just having chairs instead of a sofa now that we are older . Get a square adaptable sectional style sofa . That is one that has more of a lounge end that can be changed to go either right or left . This makes room changes easier .

The sectional is 109 inches depth and width.The sofas drawn in our 84 inches long. The sofas I have chosen are from the gallerie. I do like the diversity that two sofas brings to the room. We could do two different L shapes or have them across from each other. This is the one reason I am hesitant to get the sectional, because I feel we will be married to one layout only. Unfortunately the television is not over the mantle because I wanted that to highlight either a beautiful mirror or artwork. The television will be to the right of the fireplace, you look at the third photo to see the space for it. I definitely like how the sectional centers on the TV more and that is helpful for the young ones. I have to make the decision soon and have been going back and forth on which option is best for the long run.

Can I ask which one you went for in the end and what your thoughts are now? I am now in the same situation, debating between both options. My room is laid out similar to yours with the T.V to the right of the chimney breast. However, my room is very small so with either 2 sofas or a corner sofa there is only space for 1 small, compact armchair.

If your drawing is to-scale, your "two sofas" look more like love seats which will seat fewer people. In this room, the sectional looks like the better idea...definitely better for snuggling with two kids.

Hey C Green - So funny you asked. After 2.5 years with the TV on the right and a sectionals SHOVED to the wall as centering it didn't make sense to see the TV - we finally agreed to move our TV over our fireplace. Two weeks ago I sold the sectional and purchased two sofas from West Elm (on sale). I was tired of having everything shoved over to the right and now we have more walking room and everything seems more simplistic, visually appealing and live-friendly. We will make the old TV cabinet a dry bar area soon with antique mirror back and perhaps mounted glass shelves.
