not sure where the photos I am uploading are but I do not see them in my idea book. Is there a way to upload multiple instead of one at a time -- I have a lot of photos saved up

You can select multiple photos during the upload process. In the left hand navigation on your profile page, you will see "photos" - click there and you'll see them. You can then add them to ideabooks as desired. Be sure you are following our terms of use when uploading http://www.houzz.com/termsOfUse.
