rredpenn, I marvel at how seriously some of the dilemmas about furniture placement and the like are taken. And how it's almost a given that we can afford to replace everything we have to achieve the 'right look.'

I live a half a mile from Marysville Pilchuck High School where 5 kids were lured to their death 8 days ago. The three girls are dead, and one boy is in critical conditon. Another was only shot through the jaw, and will recover. It makes you realize how tentative life is, and how unimportant things are.
Boy, haleydaniels, you've got that right!

About all the pros who tell people to replace stuff, that drives me nuts. Someone will say they are on a budget or that the furniture is new, and the first thing suggested is to buy something new geesh!

Hayley that is so very sad. Horrible. Life needs perspective for our values.

There are not many that can replace an entire room!

Depo, I see the same thing. Apparently the posters are not really listening.
I guess that's been my point all morning, but I'm not good at articulating. Isn't the sign of a true pro one who listens? There are maybe 5 on here that do that, you being one of them LB.

''I want a bright white with Mondrianesque primary color accents inspired kitchen. But I just bought these Jack Daniels whisky barrel chairs for my breakfast area and we have orangey oak cabinets. What should I do?''

Sorry, but tbere IS no other right answer sometimes than to get rid of the elephant in the room. Or change the mission statement entirely. You can't get to NYC from Chicago by going west. Unless you completely circumnavigate the globe and spend way too much time and effort doing that.
Good point Sophie. Sometimes you just can't get to the absolute desired look with items you already own, but I've remained quite stubborn about keeping most of my things and my house had improved a bunch by rearranging, painting and other cheaper methods suggested by Houzzers. The Houzz gang that has helped me through so many dilemmas has adjusted to my desire to keep things and my desire to stay within budget. But, yes there are always those that say "start over".
    But I don't have an elephant .
In my room just things I love :0)

LB..can I ask you a favor? I've been following and trying to encourage a cute little gal in Austin TX who has painted her house a deep teal in honor of her Jamaican roots. She's getting some flack from naysayers, and I am afraid she will be turned off. Maybe you could use your "Pro" label and some encouraging words for her? I think if her thread stays active with some positive words, esp. from more than just a few of us, she'd be encouraged! Thanks! Her thread is here... https://www.houzz.com/discussions/painted-brick-update-dsvw-vd~1245962

Rred, I agree. Some people are really nasty. If you can't speak in a nice way, then super glue your lips. ;)
Oh and anyone else too should go see this cute little place and give her a vote of encouragement. She is positive, and seems to let the flack roll off, but man, what is it with the negativity? All she wants is trim color suggestions. Her ideabook too has amazing ideas for her front yard.

The design dilemma above might be solved by giving the client choices of what is mentioned, but another choice is to go with an eclectic design using all the things desired. The designer's creativity can add to the mix to bring it all comfortably together for that clients' tastes.

LOL LB ....What does soft steps on the rocks might be good mean??? Are we speaking in pro code?;))

Hey- I went to that thread rred, and I agree a lot of negative comments were said BUT if the poster would have clarified her style, neighborhood, etc. in the post intro I think that could have curbed the comments. I always thought Houzz should have a prompt to help new posters create their dilemma.

Strength in who we are, can make 'all' things okay! Never mind. It's all okay for all. People are different in a lot of ways and alike in a lot of ways.

Good point Margo... that might be too easy for us though LOL. Then we might not need to read all the comments. Best to read the thread, too many of OP's afterthoughts occur. Can not edit the dilemma once posted :((
  • 11 years ago
Well, maybe some basic help. I mean when a poster says *help* me with my livingroom. Everyone goes on and on for days with wall colors, then the OP comes back and says "OH, forgot to tell you we are renting and the landlord will not let us paint." That is when I want to give the OP a nasty nasty tongue lashing ;))

I love color too, but the last three houses I have lived in have been grey w/wht. trim, black shutters and I end up painting the front door red. I guess I'm predictably boring and like rred live through other peoples colorful houses. LOL
