I think you need to update the lighting and frame the mirror for starters. Perhaps change the towel bars also.

(by the way most big box stores will cut your wood to size)

Then remove the cabinet doors to lightly sand them, remove dust and paint.

I can't see the floor in this image so it's hard to suggest colors. It looks white or bisque from here though. Paint is easy to alter. I can see doing the cabinet in the bisque - like the tub - and adding handles. Then doing a seafoam green for the walls. Color is very personal. And suggestions can be made from what ever you choose.

Head to a bath store and see what colors strike you and then we can play from there. The images I posted are the colors currently trending.

If on a budget: stick with polished chrome so it goes with shower surround. Change the vanity light. instead of towel bars, consider some cool hooks to drape towels over. They are so much more practical. Paint the cabinet. I see the tub is a tan. What color is the floor and what color would you like to bring in there? Don't know why I can't attach a photo. Darn

The bathroom floor is beige and white tile. The tub and vanity is Grey and white. Light fixture, hooks and framed mirror will be a done deal. Awesome suggestions. Love seafoam, grey's and tapes but not sure to go espresso cabinets or white. Def want chrome handles and fixtures.

Lisa the shower surround and any other metal in there ... can be sprayed with rustoleum. You can change the look of the surround easily to say and aged bronze or brushed chrome.

Easy is relative :) Practice with a spray can first so you know how with out drips and overruns. Then it's a matter of masking everything off and covering everything else mostly taking your time. A light light coat...let it dry ( about 5 to 10 minutes) then inspect.. then another light coat rinse and repeat until you reach the depth and tone and texture you want. The process of covering and masking off may take an hour. The paint process another hour or so. And yes, you can do eeet!!
For heavily used items like the faucets sand, steelwool and use a sealer.

Yes.....Doing the cabinet the grey of the tub, I think it's called putty, with either a wash or a full paint. If you paint use a sheen that matches the tub - you don't want a high gloss on the cabinet if the tub is a mid gloss). Paint the mirror frame the same color as your trim.

Really love this look and I am totally buying into the elegance of the gray. I want the bathroom to reflect a place of tranquility and cleansing. The flow of the colors is exactly what would do this. On a finishing note....deep gray accents i.e. towels, rugs etc. or white?

Lisa so far we have painted the canvas neutral and not addressed decor or color other then "buy a white stove if you have a white refrigerator".

I've given you ways to address the bathroom, take it out of the 80/90's. For instance, let's look at framing that mirror you can go with plain strips of wood or something very ornate or even colonial. This will determine the decor.

Decor is another animal..below are 4 images, all very different styles, all of which would work for your bath. What (if any) appeals to you? If you have something else you prefer..we can work toward that. Many times it's taking an image and adapting it you fit your space.

My husband and I both agree on the third picture. We both like modern. Very clean lines...almost clinical-lol. I am a minimalist. Not into knick knacks and such. I am starting the painting tomorrow on the bathroom and will not be able to paint the cabinets or replace the light fixture until the end of the month because of family coming in. My husband is framing the vanity mirror and we discussed a plain frame or at a maximum maybe a decorative molding on the top and bottom but nothing ornate. We selected a paint similar to picture 3. It is grey with blue hues and a slight cream as a trim color.

Perfect!! I can't wait to see what you come up with. The color will make a huge difference in that room.

I think you need to get all the pieces together before you pass judgement. The orange tone of the cabinet is still overpowering.

I agree with lucidos. Daylight photos will be more helpful too. I think the vanity could be painted light or dark. Could you share the name of the paint color you selected?

Pebble Cinder Gray is the color. It is a little lighter than I wanted but I was too afraid of going too dark. My husband wants the cabinets in a dark (even black) espresso or the such. We were going to wait until our family is gone but I think I am going to go ahead and start sanding down the cabinets tomorrow after work. I will take additional photos tomorrow. Would it be weird to paint the wall area where the tub is a shade or two darker leaving the rest of the bathroom the color it is now? In addition, thinking of pulling down the shelf over the tub and placing a long vertical picture there.

Lisa-I Love Pebble Cinder Gray! I think you're right on track about painting the area around the tub a deeper hue---as there appears to be very little contrast in light/dark value between wall and tub. Dark cabinetry will look fabulous. Like the idea of the vertical art too! Keep us posted... :)

Lisa... That's an old and favored decorating trick to paint a wall or an area a few shades darker. Great thought there. I mocked up a dark cabinet in brown, grey and black so you can compare.

Personally, I like the black best and think the mirror may look good in black too. I'll toss some hardware on there.

I think a dark gray instead of black or espresso would pull the colors together.

Suggestion..Use a wood primer. Then use a small foam roller (after you sand it) for application. I suggest a high gloss Rustoleum paint. It will need 2 or 3 coats.

Will the roller cover the corners and edge or will I need to brush in those areas?

Ok I'm going to share a trick :) When you take the doors off. On the back of them put 4 nails with big heads like roofing nails. You don't have to sink them far. These will act as feet to allow you to do the edges easily and allow the edges to dry without sucking up the paper. I do the same thing for chair feet too. I use an artist brush for the cervices. Use long strokes the entire length of the door or drawer. When the cabinet is dry get a paste wax and go over it.

The small foam roller is great. Makes for a very smooth finish. The paint will level like butter on a hot day. Long straight strokes. Don't overly saturate the roller and use light to medium pressure. Put the roller in the fridge between coats.

I will have to try that nail in door trick, seems as though it might be a bit sturdier than balancing the doors on my upside down pots and pans. LOL! Keep us posted...

U are a freaking genius. Everyday this project is becoming a joy instead of a root canal because of you! Thank you sooo much! Didn't get any work done on the cabinet because I spent too much time in Lowes. Major ADHD! But I am off the next two days and determined to start. I did give the bathroom a second coat of paint and I scrub the vanity to remove dirt, make up, oil and the such. So tomorrow I can begin removing the hardware and doors. Is there any difference I should know between the partical board side and the real wood in the front??

No..as long as you seal it first you'll be fine. Paint the backs first. It's gonna be gorgeous..

As far as ADHD and Lowes My husband refuses to go to those stores with me. All day affair. Hah...I did manage to get him to accompany me to the local hardware store that's been around for 100 years. We needed a replacement latch for the screen door. The ones at the big box are plastic crap. Anyway.. $ 60.00 later Saddle soap and paste wax and...Fox Run Items :) and we were only there for an hour!!

In the end he said to me "You have got to be the only woman on the planet that enjoys going to these stores and that wears high heels while doing so."

U ladies have no idea. My husband can't even find his way into a Lowe's parking lot. It drives me insane. When we enter he stops right inside the doorway and waits for me to take the lead.....damn...! Anyway, he is an "indoor boy" that I don't believe has ever soiled his hands on anything. I do all the repairs at home from the kitchen sink clogs, air filters, pool cleaning, landscaping and painting our entire house (30 foot ceilings) without him even lifting a finger! But God love him-he is pretty as hell! So this project is all mine. I enjoy it and it has huge payoffs when you realize how you have stretched yourself. It is awesome to find others who is as passionate and educated on such things. It makes this project so much more fun.
