How do you keep the grass short?

This looks similar in width to our own yard, and would love to put down a small patch of grass like this. BUT how do you mow it? How frequently? Is it work it to maintain? Maybe it is a special grass that grows slowly? Thanks.

For a small patch of short grass as shown, you should consider artificial grass. No cutting, water, or bugs. And it almost looks real.
