Not a bad layout, a it dark, I would paint white, with different lighting.

I agree. Nice layout. It's very hard to know what color would be best based on the picture.. if you are thinking white, make sure the walls including back splash, will somehow match. I wonder about a chandelier above the island, perhaps nice ceramic flooring (though if you have hardwood, there is no need to change it), and adding a vase with fresh flowers will always make a difference in the overall decor! :)

I like the combination of white cabinets, black counters and hardwood floors. In addition to lighting, you may also want to add handles to your doors and possibly stain your wood floors a darker tone (as pictured).

I would leave the floors alone and paint the cabinets a warm white with honed slate for counters and some new lighting single track would be the most affordable and you can use it for above the island lighting too.
