If you are talking about a light or white marble, yes, they can stain. To prevent this, you need to seal the marble every 6 months. You can get the sealer and apply it yourself. Marble is porous so wine, tomato sauce, can stain if allowed to sit on surface. A white marble kitchen is beautiful. There are also quartz products that now look like marble with veining and the will not stain nor do you need to seal them. Look at Pental quartz or Ceasarstone quartz.

what about full body porcelain tile that looks like marble? we have that on our outdoor bbq counter in gloss, and on the pool water line in matte finish. it's fab.
