If budget allows, replace the countertop and backsplash to a solid material such as granite. Otherwise the overall look is fine.

Depending on your budget, I would upgrade to new granite or quartz countertops. Quartz is very modern, and some clean lines like a subway tile backsplash would go nicely with your existing cabinets. It looks like you might even be able to get away with adding an island.
