    What color is this?

I'm not a designer, just renovating my own house, and so far, all my paint has been custom colors I created because I couldn't find the exactly right shade. It's that way with a lot of decorators. I spend a small fortune in samples, then tweek them to suit my preferences, but in the end, I get the color I want.

Depends on if you want a blue-gray, yellow-gray, green-gray -- they all have undertones of one color or another. Start out with something as close to what you think you want, buy some white and black flat (as little as you can find), lots of little plastic containers, and go to it. Sometimes I go back to the store and have them tweek the color a bit -- more yellow, more blue. whatever.

Paint something you can carry around -- a small board, a piece of drywall (that is what you'll ultimate be painting). Compare to your carpet, sofa, draperies.

Paint patches on your walls where both the sun catches it and in shadow. Paint at least 2 coats of each color on the walls before you decide. Look at it in lamp light. (Consider waht color your lightbulbs are, too. They affect the result.) Compare color chips from all kinds of paint companies to what you get, to see if there is one that is already a dead-on match. (Doesn't always happen.)

Not everybody is as picky as me. Most people settle for "close." It amazes me that not one of these paint companies can't seem to come up with the shade I want! But I have a particular eye for tone/shade/reflectivity, so I keep at it till I get what I want. Sometimes it takes weeks. This is not something that works overnight -- unless you don't mind re-painting!
