I have no idea as what can be done with the brick. You might want to consult a professional. I just had this granite put on mine a few days ago. It was simply black metal, not as large and substantial as yours. I like it a lot because all of the black metal made it look like a black hole!

Can you take another photo with the tv off & more light? It's hard to really see the fireplace.

It looks like those 2 small squares are tiles. I'd like to see those closer. Also, move that ottoman so we can see the hearth.

Please think long & hard about changing this or painting it.

I like it the way it is. It looks like it is in keeping with the style of the home.
The only thing I might do is cap the mantle in wood and beef it up to be thicker. and paint it a creamy ivory.

Just my opinion, but I suspect that tile will look way more dated ten years from now than that timeless brick face that you already have.

I'm not averse to painting brick, although I do understand that it's a no-going-back proposition. But tiling over it just looks so trendy-HGTV-ish.
