I have a couple of these (link provided) -except longer, which I like, even if the paint has started to peel of. Actually, I think they look even better exposed. Very rustic. -Sadly it's also those, where the plastic has become brittle, but I hope I'm able to find replacements.

I just have regular boxes. I could find the box hangers for railings, but they were $12 each and I didn't feel like spending that (and my graduate assistantship sort of limits me abilities lol). So I used hanger wire with the idea that bush plants would cover it. It is virtually invisible from the ground, so that is OK as far as what others see. I see the ugly guts, thus I am hoping the achimenes really work this season lol.

Oh-- love it! I was thinking to use zip ties but ended up not doing it because I didn't want them to fail. mine are hanging over the edge, and since they occasionally fail, it would cause mine to tumble down the 3 floors. You have the situation i had with my first apartment where the boxes can sit on something which is totally awesome. At first I remember being disappointed, but later I realized how cool it is to have that support.

Yes, I'm so paranoid that I take the planters down each winter when packing up the garden, then put them back up in the spring, just in case the freezing weather might lead to the ties snapping or something. Having the ledge to support the weight is great! Plus, you can't see it but there's a second tier of the horizontal metal railing that the boxes snug right against (and is where the ties are looped around), another level of support. I can see that someone in my coop puts their window boxes on the outside ledge, but that seems way too risky to me.

When you say yours occasionally fail, do you mean the supports break, or the planters? My planters live outside year-round, so I'm keeping an eye out as I have to assume eventually the plastic might weaken and be capable of ripping where I drilled the holes. I put new ties up each season - and between hurricanes!

Oh no, mine have never failed. I meant that zip ties can fail with UV exposure or faulty plastic, etc. My boxes are fine. They are wired to my railing with thick wire, but then i have thin wire in addition to that in case the main supports fail. There is no walk way under my railing, so if they fell, they wouldn't hit anyone-- but I don't want my stuff to fall regardless. I also set mine outside to get the sun. if they were inside, I'd lose that sun! Also I would miss the space some. But it's really about the sun. :)

I'm actually doing the zip tied to the railing window boxes! I located an electrical coworker at my job and told him my project, so he helped me find the best zip ties for the job. I keep an eye on them every day, so I can 'hopefully' catch if any look like they're failing. I'm on the 3rd floor as well. And same with no walkways under mine, just bushes.

When my daughter was a tiny thing, we had a half-flight of stairs in the middle of the kitchen bordered by cabinets on one side, a wrought iron railing on the other. We used this metal thingie to attach a safety gate to the iron railing. It looped around the rail and edge of the gate and tightened with a little screw thing, like when you attach the monitor cord to the back of the computer. I guess those would have come from hardware store. The right combo of words to find the right pics on google are "adjustable hose clamp." These would be good for attaching the base of little plant stands or other like items to rails for ensured upright-ness and stay-on-balcony-ness for a lot of things.

Found the coolest stuff at the hardware store. Plastic coated steel wire. Only a few $$'s per roll.

Used it to hang this pot that no longer had its' hanger, AND hang another pot from the first pot.

Easy to bend with pliers, has 25-pound strength. So much easier to deal with than fishing line. I'll be doing a lot with this stuff this summer.
