I'm thinking I need to paint a 2 foot high wooden planter box brown on the side that faces south, and I'm in the southwest USA (NM), which gets hot in the summer (high 90s for weeks). The box will have succulents in it, orange bush ice plant (Lampranthus aurantiacus, native to South Africa), which I found at Home Depot this year in flats for $10. I'm hoping it will cascade over the box, but will the stems and leaves fry even though it's a hardy succulent? I know in the wild the plant sprawls over rocks, which obviously get hot in the summer sun, but wouldn't a wall painted brown in direct sunlight get even hotter? Should I go with white paint-- even though the box will be behind a black railing at a balcony edge? I wanted to go with brown to hide the railing.
