Window planter

I have 4 large wrought iron planters mounted under my front second floor windows. They are the kind that could hold cocoa mats or another container.Up until now I have filled them with artificial vines (sorry about this) because I wanted no maintenance all year round. They are hard to get to to water: The hose does not reach far enough from the ground, and from inside I would have have to undo the screen to water anything.I need a recommendation for carefree plants that will always look lush for Spring, Summer and Fall. Whatever is in them would have to be large enough to be seen from the ground or approach to the house, as the front facade is very large. So it needs to make a statement. It always amazes me to see the overflowing, beautiful window boxes in Germany and Austria.(I can only dream)I have emptied the debris from what was left in them to the dismay of the bees and birds who made nests in them. So, they are now ready for any advice offered. I have sun and shade in that area. Maybe more shade. Thanks much. Karen
