cutting?

I am attempting to root a ceder cutting from one of our trees outside. Does this have a chance of working. I dipped the end in powder root hormone, and placed it in potting soil that is in a well drained bonsi pot. I used copper wire that was used for a juniper i had a while back. The copper is feed through the drain holes and is offering support. So what are the thoughts on this. Will it work? Is there anything I need to do, can do for this to work?

Thanks,

Dana

P.S. I have gone some bonsi before but have never tryed to start from clippings.

Early spring is the best time - when the tree is all ready to grow again. Get a little one in a pot from the nursery - only a few bucks and 5 yrs less waiting time (but of course it has to live outside for life).

There are trees with the common name "cedar" in the genera of Juniperus, Thuja, Chamaecyparis, Calocedrus, Cedrus, Cupressus, Cryptomeria, and many more. How you treat the cuttings depends on what tree you're cloning.

The most common of the genera are Juniperus and Thuja. The juniper will root fairly easily if you take dormant heal cuttings now, about 6 inches long. Strip leaves from bottom half & stick outside in garden - full sun & lightly tamp in. The Thuja cuttings are best at about 6 inches long from vigorous terminals. No need to take heal cuttings. Stick as with junipers after stripping bottom half. The actual best time to take and stick these cuttings is soon after growth stops in fall, but you should have some success if you start now. They may not root until late summer. Don't bother attempting to start cuttings indoors w/o a mist set-up.

Years ago I rooted quite a few juniper cuttings. I took tip cuttings after a few hard freezes in the fall. I had very good percentages rooting them indoors without a high dollar mist system.

The cutting were rooted in the 3 1/2" pots much like the narrow leaf ficus in the setup below. 18 pots were set on a shallow 20 x 10 tray without drain holes. One inch of gravel is placed in the tray and water is kept in the gravel area at all times. Keeping the storage container slightly elevated one end allow air flow.

I use a slightly more complicated setup now with multiple prop mats and lights on timers.

I have this in my basement. Like to start seed, root cuttings, and do a little grafting.

Thanks Lucy. I have to grow a lot of weeds to support my habit:-).

Darn! You must have been the guy whose add. my husband (who was in OK on bus. recently) couldn't find! I told him to go by the scent, but he obviously didn't get it!

I will be digging out the stump of a 14 ft cedar tree broke off due to strong winds. Question is do cedars root out? I will be flat cutting the base. Any comments or suggestions, restrictions will be extreamly appreciated.
