Will any of the plant production methods include tissue culture?

My understanding is that this class will cover all aspects of production and greenhouse management. My guess would be that tissue culture will be included at least ot some degree. We will be producing plants to offer for sale at the end of the semester to benefit the plant science department, clubs etc.

Having taught classes like that for a number of years, I can suggest which kinds of things sell like crazy.

Hanging baskets with assorted Catharanthus roseus, impatiens, or geraniums. This is a nice way to use purchased plugs. Seeds are easy, too.

Coleus

Tomatoes! Don't choose the everyday varieties found in the big box stores...but focus on flavor. We sold out of heirlooms every year, for example.

Peppers....ALL kinds! OMG, the hot varieties flew out of the door.

Zinnia linearis (angustifolia) 'Crystal series'. They fill the cell packs with blooms in a very few weeks.

Herbs with basil varieties being the top seller. Who can resist?

Hanging baskets or 6" pots of Lantana camara (assorted).

Marigolds, but not the typical ones...there are soooo many interesting hybrids.

Portulaca, which we grew as solid flats (portulaca 'cakes', lol) then cut up into smaller pieces to plant into baskets or 6" pots. Couldn't grow enough of those.

Dwarf sunflowers

Fern baskets, purchases as liners.

House plant assortment, propagated from greenhouse stock.

If I can suggest that you use the larger cell pack sizes, too, you'll all be much happier. Not only are they much easier to care for in the greenhouse, but they result in a far superior plant.

We grew lots of other things, too, but the above list were the best sellers within our college and community, that's for sure!
