It might be worth a try to simply plant some of the grocery store sunflower seeds that are sold for snacks for humans. I did that with some of the corn-nut snack giant corn seeds, because I couldn't find them in a seed catalog. I also planted Sun-Chokes from the produce section to get a start of good Jerusalem Artichokes. And I selected extra large Elephant Garlics from grocery store produce, with good results. You do run some risk when planting seeds from grocery store produce, in that some of it might be genetically modified. Seed catalogs don't offer genetically modified seeds, because GMOs are a controversial issue that could cause a consumer boycott.
