Hey Rose!

Although I enjoy flowers, I mostly grow food on my balcony - my family (affectionately) tells me I am an "Aggie with out an Acre". This year I had to start late because of a move, but I have managed to grab the following from the store:

- Tiny Tim tomatoes
- Glorious Tomatoes
- Red Shepperd peppers
- California Wonder green peppers
- Jalapeños
- various herbs (basil, purple basil, thyme, rosemary,
oregano, sage, and mint)

And then I seeded:

- Cherry belle and Philadelphia White box Radishes
- Chiogga beets
- Purple Dragon carrots
- Bunyard's Matchless Romaine lettuce
- Oaky red splash lettuce (oak leaf type)
- 3 types of beans (green, purple, and yellow)

I am also hoping to pick up a dwarf fruit tree sometime this year...

I'm not sure I have one purpose for balcony gardening. Everything from being closer to my food, to beauty, to having a bit of country in the city!

What is on your balcony?

I have aJuncus Spiralis which spiraled last year. I cut it down brought it in for the winter. It is on my NYC terrace-it grew back but it's STRAIGHT What can do to get it to spiral again? Thanks

Well, Bonsai plants are the best. They look magnificent!

i mostly have my houseplants out on my balcony. its north facing so i don't have to worry about the sun cooking them much. other than them i have a black-eyed susan vine, a sunflower in a bucket, a crate filled with various lettuce, a banana tree, basil, oregano, rosemary, cilantro, parsley, and lavender.

oh and a little bonsai tree :)

I have tomatoes, lettuce, sunflowers, and a couple of herbs. There was an eggplant, but it got aphids and had to go bye bye...

I don't have much because we might move soon. But growing now is sedum Autumn Fire, Russian sage cuttings, taro, lemongrass and a curry leaf plant. If I got more sun, I would have tomatoes as well.

Reason for growing was always interest in growing herbs and not having any alternate space -- and yes, making the balcony more intersting. Successfully grew, on an east-facing balcony:

-basil
-mint
-sage
-cornflower
-palms

Was not successful with:
-rosemary
-tropicals
-poppies
-chamomile (from seed)
-lavender

Kippie, what a great idea! I moved this year and now have this great balcony (above the covered deck below - what a place!). I planned to have a mini oasis of flowers up there, but hey - what a great place to grow lettuce, radishes and green peppers. Finally! I can outsmart all the bunnies and deer! Thanks for the wonderful idea.
