japanese dwarf maple on a NYC terrace

I have just come into a large terra cotta planter and a japanese dwarf maple. I want to put them together, but need some advice. The planter, 30" diameter, has no holes in the bottom for drainage. Do I need to put a liner in the pot before transplanting the tree? Should I put gravel on the bottom of the pot? How about what kind of soil mixture? Any advice is welcomed. Thanks.
