If manure, it's likely to burn out your seeds. Manure should be used only when it's been composted first.

Out in the garden, unless you're starting a new bed that you donÂt plan to plant for some time, itÂs best to use composted manure. Fresh or raw manures are more concentrated in nutrients and will burn your plants. Sheep and especially poultry manure are considered "hot" and may burn seedlings and transplants, inhibit seed germination, or make your perennials grow so fast and thin that they fall over.

Raw manure contains pathogens that could make you sick and weed seeds that will spread to your garden.

If your soil-less planting mix is also sterile, then it would be relevant whether your composted manure is also sterile. If your planting mix is sterile and your manure isn't, then you would be converting your sterile planting mix to non-sterile by adding some of the manure. Composting manure doesn't necessarily make it safe from the standpoint of harmful organisms. You might want to take that into consideration, particularly if damping-off is a concern for your seedlings.

The only time I ever use composted manure in a seed bed is when planting a new lawn. After sowing the seeds on the prepared soil surface I cover the seeds with the composted steer manure. It is easy to see by the color when the surface is evenly damp and I have never had a problem with birds eating the seed. Weeds in the new lawn was never a problem. I would not use manure in any container seed planting but I might use a manure tea to water the container AFTER the seed has germinated and roots are evident. Al

I agree with Al. In addition, I can say that once upon a time, I put a great deal of manure in pots that I grew on my deck. Big mistake. It was so heavy that the plants literally smothered to death. Stick with your soilless potting medium in containers. When you prepare your beds, mix the manure into the soil there. With a few exceptions, all plants will love the effect manure has on your garden soil.
