For veggies what about trying some veggies that do well in semi-shade places like lettuce, spinach, and chard? I've never tried them with less then 4 hours sunlight, but it might be worth a shot? For herbs: oragano, chives, parsley, thyme, and sage all grow alright in partial shade.

Is the issue just that the sun doesn't come on to your balcony because of the roof? If that is the case put some window boxes up. They aren't deep enough for most tomatos, but they will grow beans, radishes, smaller peppers, and some cherry tomato varieties really well.

I think there is a tomato that grows in window boxes. Tumbling tom maybe?

I've also read that painting the ceiling white can increase reflected light.

I'm growing tomatoes with the same type of sun. Last year was not good. This year, so far so good. I made sure to move them as close to the railing where they can get the most sun. Also, this year I added plant food.

Hi everyone, I'm new here and glad to find a forum just for balcony gardening.
On my balcony, I grow leaf lettuce, spinache, flat leaf parsley, dill, basil, and thyme in mostly shade during the winter. The plants do well with only three hours of direct sun, but are right at the balcony railing and grow through. Of course they would grow faster with more sun.
