i've never heard of worms that eat leaves...could they be caterpillars?

You sure they're not slugs? I've got tons of hosta and, if I don't spread lots of anti-slug pellets around (available at your local garden center, Target or Wally world) they will chow down on your hostas.

Anyway, I've never actually managed to see a slug, but it's probably worth a box of slug pellets to find out?

I have the same problem. They have stripped certain varieties down to nothing. I have grown beautiful host as for years. Had slugs from tome to time. This is the first year for this.

Slugs and snails absolutely adore Hostas. I can't grow them at all in the ground in my garden. I have only one and it has to be grown in a container atop a 3 foot tall chimney pot. if I don't put down pellets, even up there is gets destroyed.

Try mulching with pine needles and applying diatomaceous earth. I seems to have less slug problems once I mulch my garden with straws. Sometimes you just have to come out at night with a scissor and caught them in the act.

max, thanks for the tips but sadly nothing on earth can protect plants from gastropods in my garden and climate. The ground is constantly moist and it rains frequently so DE or any other remedy that needs to be dry is useless. The snails and slugs we get here will cross anything, including straw, egg shells, coffee grounds, grit and pine needles. If you look carefully you'll see that the base of the Hosta in my photo is surrounded by crushed egg shells. I do go out at night, mainly for revenge, since however many hundreds I destroy each year they always beat me.

The worms on my hostas are small pink & it looks as though A lawnmower blade ran along the bottom sides of the leaves & shredded them.
