Matthiola incana is the Latin for stock. They are an annual and they have a lovely clove scent. They like sun and fertile soil. Actually Plants of Distinction referred to them as a frost hardy biennial, so take your pick. You will get flowers the first year. They are one of my favorites in a pot on my patio where I like to sit. Enjoy.

Thanks so much! I assume that "frost hardy" means they can take a very light freeze or two? I'd like to go ahead and plant them outside, but we may have a cold night or two yet.

I think they are really pretty flowers!! Need I deadhead to continue the blossoming?

Yes do deadhead to keep them blooming. Stocks also prefer cooler weather and may stop blooming when it gets hot.

They are very, very easy to start from seed and once I bought a market pack and fell in love with their scent and the looks of the double flowered ones, and now I start a few dozen every year (with winter sowing) and fill my window boxes and containers with them until the heat makes them fade. Then I change over to petunias in the window boxes and impatiens in the containers which end up in more shade once the trees fully leaf out.
