air layer now?

Hello,

A 2 foot tall hackberry with a 5" diameter trunk and a giant tap root in a rocky cliff. I want to airlayer the whole thing a few inches above the ground. Should I do the girtling/airlayering now before the buds swell, or is it better to first let it leaf out above where the cut will eventually take place later in the spring. If I plan on cutting all the way around the circumfence of the tree, should I reduce some of the leaf volume, so the whole tree wont dry out and die. Or should I do the technique where several slices are made around the tree, rather than a 100% girtling.

thanks, castorcrap
