Two-needle pine proper spring pruning technique

Hello, all...sorry to ask again, but I have been reviewing my literature and am still confused regarding proper conifer spring technique. The tree in question is a Pinus virginiana. I am interested in keeping it at its present size - ramification is pretty good - just interested primarily in needle length reduction at this point. Can anyone advise in a fairly straightforward way the proper way to perform spring candle pinching? Thanks in advance for your input.

I was also confused & finally started a program of pinching selected candles in half when they reached less than an inch.In my area this happens in March,which I found would give me needles that would be ready to show @ our local county fair in early June.I`ll show last years results in the gallery & next to it you`ll see tradition practice of cutting all candles in May,which was done by my Japanese friend.I have current pic of this years progress of cut candles ,which I can show if desired--Z--

Tom, what part of the country are you in? Here in Kansas city it's far too early to be candle pruning for needle length, by about two months, at least. Southern CA is a different case...
