I would sow now....I usually winter sow.

You could do either one. If you have a sunny window or grow lights, you could pot them and give them a bit of a head start. However, that would then mean you'd have to take care of them as they grow, and harden them off before planting. If you don't mind that, then go ahead and plant them now. They might bloom a little earlier that way, but I think the difference would be minor. If you direct sow, they will germinate when the conditions are right, and your only concern is that you could get hit with a late, killing frost, in which case you'd either have to cover the "babies" or lose them all. Your choice. I actually do a combination of both, depending on what I'm growing. MacThayer

I had some sown in my mini-greenhouse (Read: shelves with clear plastic zipper cover on it) and they were taking their time. So I put some in the garden as well. I just noticed a greenhouse one popping up the other day. Since we now have SNOW(??!!) I am hoping I am covered either way.

In my experience I've found that direct sowing early to mid fall (or allowing them to self-sow) and letting them winter over as seedlings gave far more superior plants than spring started (or wintersown)plants. I don't know if it's injury to the root at transplanting time or if the fall head start makes them stonger? I just know it made quite a bit of a difference for me :D

I grow and use alot of dried flowers for my own personal use and find that Larkspur does not like to have their roots tampered with and agree with Vera.You will get a much better plant with a greater production of flowers and longer blooming time when you direct sow.I usually sow my seeds in March but you can sow them now,They are a cool weather plant and like the sun on the flower heads and their feet cool.((roots))
I used to sell my flowers at the festivals and made good on the Larkspur.They are very sought after where live.

I have larkspur blooming in full sun and little seedlings still coming up in part shade. They're not as picky as some annuals. Plant some now and more in the fall.
